Bug in Media > SD?

Post by BR »

I am under OS version 1.21.
In Media when I access the SD card sometimes it's not showing any files/folders and sometime it shows randomly only Folders (but empty inside them)...weird
It happened before many times and I figured out by rebooting the Pa4x. But today even after rebooting the Pa4x it's still Not showing any flies (SET, BKP, MP3, Folders) in Media > SD. I installed this SD card (32GB) from the first day I got the PA4x.

Does any body experienced this issue? or is there any workaround?
Can this issue be considered as a Bug?
Any feedback appreciated.

It depends on what you are trying to do. The drive only shows what is relative to the operation you are doing. However, generally, folders show up.
For example, if you are trying to LOAD something, you can see folders where text is stored, but if you open the folders there is nothing "loadable" there since text isn't loaded.
If you are looking to open a file from the Song Play menu, only loadable items will be shown. However, it doesn't look inside folders for the song, so the folder may appear but when you open it, it shows nothing.
Hope this helps. I know I didn't explain it very well.

DonM,
Thanks and you explained very well and I agree with you but what I am trying to load are MP3s in Song Mode
and I have lot of songs in MP3 format in the SD card that sometimes are showing in Song Mode and sometimes they disappear bizarrely.

I would definitely use a different SD card.
Korg do not guarantee that all brands of SD cards and USB-flash drives will work.

You may just be unlucky. Also, these can be intermittent - I have a USB flash drive (32GB) which does that.

Try a different brand of SD card and see if you get the same problems.
If you do, then you may have a problem with the SD port itself.

Let us know how you go.

I have had a similar problem - MP3's on SD simply disappear (including the folder in which they are stored). Nothing to do with how I navigate, as the MP3's are attached to Songs in the Songbook, and when the Song Entry is selected it throws a file missing error.

I have just today installed a new SD Card because of this problem and will report back - the error is random and usually occurs after a few days, not immediately.

[It is true that Korg do not guarantee comparability with all brands of SD Card, but I have been unable to find which brands they do recommend (some users have recommended certain cards, but that's not the same as a Korg recommendation). ]

I imagine it would be impossible to "recommend" brands as the brand-names are so unreliable - meaning you can "think" you have a certain brand but it may not be so.
These things are thrown out of so many factory locations I believe this is why manufacturers cannot confirm recommendations - I know this particularly from using IBM equipment.

Short of Korg actually manufacturing the SD cards I cannot see this changing BUT in the above cases there is always the possibility of hardware fault if ALL SD cards fail the same way.

Sadly it may cost you a couple of SD cards :(

@Pete,
I am using the same SD Card since April 2016 and It worked without any problem and this issue happens randomly as pa4x_user mentioned.
If Korg company cannot recommend any appropriate SD Card or Flash Drive brand and the users neither cannot recommend anyone, so I don't know what would be the solution!... :D
I just add that this problem happens randomly with different flash drive that I use too with Pa4x.

The similar problem happens sometime with my Pa900 when using a Flash Drive too (with my Pa900 I use only Flash Drive not SD card).
It could be probably some conflict or glitch in both OS (Pa4x and Pa900).

That's not good.... Have you had similar problems with other SD cards?

UPDATE ON MY SD CARD PROBLEMS

I was originally using a Lexar 64Gb MicroSDHC and kept losing files every day or two.

I replaced that with a 32Gb Sandisk microSDHC UHS-1 (about 3 weeks ago now) and everything seems to be fine.

Sorry to bring back this post but the problem is still there.

Under OS v2.1.
Back to the same problem after almost a year with the same SD Card installed last year but this time under OS v2.1. and in Style Play mode.

Every time I want to save my Set, in Style Play mode, I go to Media > Save and select SD card but nothing is showing.
This started happening since last week.
Workaround I found but not logical: Media > Enable /Disable USB and get back to Save and then all data under SD card reappears.

Does anybody have this kind of problem?

Never had this problem but I still stand by my recommendation to change the SD card - the fact that it has worked for a while is still not confirmation that the card is OK or one that the 4X is "happy" with.

HOWEVER, you say that this same intermittent failure happens with USB drives too - I would be getting the PA4X checked out by Korg (service) whilst you still have warranty...

Cheers

(P.S. Polite reminder to POWER OFF before replacing the SD)

also it is a good idea to use an anti static wrist strap (or other way of grounding yourself) when installing /changing the sd card. It sb protected, but one never knows.

SD cards

Causes of memory card corruption sometimes results from human error - but often it does not.

SD cards have slightly more physical memory blocks and if some of them are bad, they are substituted with ones from the spare blocks pool. So SD cards map (and mask) internal memory array to the outside world and and you purchase a 100% error-free SD card.

SD cards with more bad blocks then available spares are "downgraded" to lower capacity. So you can get maybe 4GB to buy, but produced initially for 8GB with 1GB bad physical blocks, where handling is performed by internal masquerade-controller, to show 4GB to the outside world.
