Example - Pa4X and Omnisphere in a studio production

Post by Minneapolis Musician »

Here is a song I recorded in my studio using both the Pa4X and Omnisphere.

The Pa4X provided the "bed", the foundation rhythmic tracks. I used Omnisphere for the other "atmospheric", space-producing pads and some lead sounds. The Pa4X tracks were individually modulated throughout the song with per-track automation. Example, the drums are brought up and down in volume depending upon the verse. The bass as well.

In general Omnisphere is used more and more as the song "builds", particularly with the arpeggios in double time that provide the drive later.

Omnisphere really kicks in in Verse 3 and beyond.

I was able to use professional reverbs to glue it together and add a slight '50s slap echo on the vocal.

Hi Glen,
Liked your song a lot. I feel there's something wrong about the rhythmic section in general. It sounds like the accompaniment is trying to catch up with the beat or something to that effect. It could also be the Echo effect that throws things off a bit. Maybe everything's fine and it's just me hearing it this way!

Thanks, Sam.

Do you mean the double time arpeggios from Omnisphere in verse 3 and beyond? They have an echo that sometimes interferes with perfect sync, but overall I felt the "energy" was alright for the track and left it as is without sweating it more. I tried quantizing those notes, but the "organic" echo actually needs something else to get it really tight. And I was too tired of working on it to sweat it any longer. Lol.

Notice on the very last chord and fade out how complex the arpeggio echo is. That's the issue, I think. I could drop in a better arpeggio that is less "echo complex" and it will be tight, I am sure.

One thing I have noticed is that when I export a Pa4X SMF to Sonar, there are often a few timing glitches. Haven't been able to track down exactly what is happening yet. Overall, I let the blemishes stay as my listeners are more about the song lyrics and overall feel and aren't that attuned to the occasional timing imperfection. But like you, I do hear them.

It's no big deal as you got your point across through the song regardless, but yeah I hear some glitches especially on the fills, and often when you transition from one chord to another... plus some of the background arps and echo effects that are kind of stepping on the main notes. I'm guessing you recorded the vocal track before you added everything else, as it would be very hard to have a tight timing reference with everything that's going on here.

Again, it could be just me hearing things in a certain way...

Sam,

Yes, I recorded the vocal with just the Pa4X bed. I sweetened it with the arps and pads later.
