SmartMedia Write Protected

I can't load new samples via SmartMedia because Windows reports that it's write protected. I did some research and I guess the little circle on my card id too sniny, is reflecting light, and therefore appears write protected. I've tried blacking it out with a sharpie and electrical tape and using a different card reader but all the same.
My ESX can reformat it, which is nice but not useful.
Short of buying another card, what can I do? Any registry or Linux tips?
