Need Synth/Harmonica sound from "What's Love Got To Do

Post by hand solo »

This is supposedly a classic DX-7 sound...also on "Shake You Down" by Gregory Abbott and many 80s songs....did a search here, thought for sure somebody would've hit up Enigmahack for it :). No luck.

Anybody delved into this?

thanks superstars !

Haha - thanks indirectly for the programming plug.

Did you know that the Kronos can load DX-7 sounds? If you can find the sysex dump for the DX-7 sound, your Kronos has the ability to load it using the MOD-7 engine and it sounds basically identical in almost every freaking way.

If you get really stuck but can research/narrow down which sound it is, I have almost every DX-7 sound made so could likely find it for you and put it into PCG format worst-case.

Just let me know :)

Sidenote, here's a good starting point:

Well, do you know if it's a stock program in the DX7? If it was used by a bunch of people, it probably was.

In the big download in the link I mentioned there, check for the "romA" and "romB" packs - there are others too, but you can load the sound banks into empty slots in sets of 32 - you likely can find the sound you're looking for in there. (Load all of the ROM sounds into empty banks and then move the one you need into somewhere it makes sense)

Just a little bit of google-fu lead me to this:

Check out Patches 17 and 18, which are the two harmonica patches :)

You should be able to download and open the file. Then put the contents of the ZIP file on a USB stick and stick it in the Kronos. In Kronos disk mode, find the files and load them to an empty bank.

Awesome! Glad you were able to find it! (Also a good tidbit of info for future travellers needing that sound)

Hay Enigmahack.....loaded up the sample in my "Shake You Down" combi, sounds great ! bump up the gain and add a little verb, you're good to go.

looks like the flute in the opening measures of "What's love got to do with it" is also a DX-7 patch...maybe "ROM 3A #1 Flute " in the Yamaha system..have you by chance seen that floating around the net ?

cheers mate

Sure thing man.

Scroll down a little bit and you'll find the main ROM set from the DX-7 presets. There's ROM1 through ROM4 plus a bunch of others, which likely includes the flute you're looking for :)
