There must be a way to do this but I can't figure it out!
I want to trigger a filter sweep with either a button or set list patch change - e.g. The sweep starts when I switch to a set list slot. It carries on independently of note on- off. I don't want to mess with the ribbon, pedal or knobs as I am playing a complicated part
Nearest I can get on AL1 is a free-running Common LFO controlling an envelope which is controlling intensity
I can't see anywhere in AL1 where I can control filter frequency (cutoff) automatically rather than intensity or resonance.
This is needed for a filter sweep during a bridge into a chorus
Any thoughts?

If you can make your performance setup work in Sequencer mode rather than Setlist mode, you can record automation on midi tracks. You can have it play back your recorded filter change inputs ,inserted to come in exactly where you want.
Not sure if or how you can make the song work for you if slotted into setlist mode if you absolutely have to have your performance on setlist. It may be possible but i cannot say for sure.
AMS options seem to be what you looked into already and Page 197-198 of parameter guide shows Frequency and cutoff details. Seems that sweeping through the frequency passes(using multi filter setting?) is what you want?
Either way "Frequency" setting does not have an AMS source linked to it on the filter "basics" tab page or "multi-filter" tab page.
"Filter Mod" filter modulation page has no reference to Frequency but the filter modulation section on the tab page has AMS settings, look at the bottom section of the filter mod page. The Parameter guide page 202 says that the AMS there is what directly controls Frequency. So that is your AMS setup area for Frequency(cutoff). You have a section for filter A and filter B and each their own AMS setting.
Now AMS mixer is another feature but i am not sure if it Mixes AMS options throughout AL-1 or if it even mixes in a way to let you control one AMS with another and that the two be the ones you need to make what you need to happen. Let me not get confused and leave AMS mixer alone.
Using Step sequencer to control Frequency is the closest i can come to Using AMS to work it out automatically, Step sequencer takes some work to sequence an automatic pattern to run and then it can be assigned to run your filter frequency modulation automatically, and then there are AMS settings in Step sequencer to change the run characteristics, but i am not sure if that includes AMS to stop/start its running. There may be a way there if you have time to look around. Step sequencer may be easier than Karma if you do not know Karma well, and i am not even sure Karma is a gauarantted option either.
Actually, there are default LFO stop switches in Tone adjust page(switches 7&8 but the function is assignable to more than the 7&8 switches) which may work to stop your LFO from free running if you use LFO to run frequency modulation in the Filter Modulation page as decribed Page 202 of parameter guide. Try your LFO there rather than intensity and resonance as you had.
Step sequencer and LFO can move frequency values in the Filter modulation tab page. It does not reference "frequency" in that tab page but the first AMS option per each of filter A or B edit section, is for modulation frequency.
Yes you can set AMS to control Frequency. Go to "Filter Mod." tab page and then see the lower screen sections for Filter A & B separate AMS assignability. Be sure to set the filter type on the filter "basics" page first.

AMS 1
- This selects the first modulation source to control Filter A’s Frequency. For a list of AMS sources, see “Alternate Modulation Source (AMS) List” on page 1097.
Intensity [–99...+99]
This controls the depth and direction of the Frequency modulation.
Intensity Mod AMS- This selects an AMS source to modulate the intensity of AMS 1.
Intensity [–99...+99]
This controls the depth and direction of the Intensity Mod AMS.
AMS 2- This selects a second modulation source to control Filter A’s Frequency. For a list of AMS sources, see “Alternate Modulation Source (AMS) List” on page 1097.
Intensity [–99...+99]
This controls the depth and direction of AMS 2. Filter B Frequency
The settings for Filter B are the same as those for “Filter A Frequency,” above.
When Link is On, or when the Filter Routing is set to Single or 24dB/oct, all of these parameters are grayed out.

to add the seq mode,
you can also record filter sweeps as patterns and trigger them through RPPR.
