Has anyone here bought the Italian Grand from Korg?

What did you think of the sound, it's worth it?

I have the demo version and up to now I think it is the second best after the Berlin. Will experiment more with it and might purchase it at the next sales on Korg shopping site.

I downloaded and installed the demo, and I liked it a lot, but I did not have the opportunity to play with the band, or in the open to know the sound "punch"

Of course, piano preferences are very personal and vary from one person to the next. I always preferred German/Austrian acoustic pianos (especially Bösendorfer) for their haunting darker tone , so the Kronos Berlin digital samples give a good example of such a sound. I prefer the Berlin because I play a lot of solo classical repertoire on the Kronos. I could give you a link of a video I did not so long ago using my own custom "variation" of the Kronos Berlin.

But it is always interesting in digital keyboards to have variety, since it is not as expensive as buying real acoustic pianos. I tested them all (the Korg libraries and from other sources) and up to now the new Korg Italian seems my second favorite with a nicely balanced tone, very well done, but with of course a more "crystalline" sound as on real Faziolis. This sound to me would be interesting for certain solo pieces which require such a clearer sound and also for non-solo performances with other sounds playing along.

It is 306 Mb. As a comparison, the Berlin by itself needs 271 Mb.

Exactly the same as for the Berlin, so 12 velocity layers for the main samples, 6 for resonance stuff, 4 for the release sounds, then you have the usual sets for mechanical noise, dampers up and down, etc. You also have similar sets for una corda samples and everything needed for stretched tuning. The total of sets is identical to the Berlin (87).

Of course, in HD-1 mode, you are "limited" to 8 layers per oscillator, but with clever programming in Combi mode, you can create anything needed.

Strongly, strongly recommend you do not buy based on recommendations of others. I know better and I still bought the Austrian Grand that way. Almost never use it. A lot of folks on here love the Berlin. I got it when I bought the K2. So unimpressed. Sounds too plunky to my ears. My wife, a pianist, agrees. But you don’t need to agree.

I rank the pianos: German, Japanese, Austrian, Berlin.

A few years ago, I was set up at a gig. Another musician played my Kronos for his set. He chose one of the Yamahas. I really dug the way he made it sound. Later, I played on it for a while. Just couldn’t connect with it. He did, and I loved the results.

I bought my first digital piano in 1988. For the next 6 years, it was a continual quest for the perfect piano sound. In those days, the tech was primitive and improving constantly. I bought tone modules from Yamaha, E-mu and Korg. I was never satisfied, always worried there was something better. I finally got off the merry-go-round and just started making the best music I could with what I had. A lot less stress!

This may help but all pianos on the Kronos are sampled pianos and not much variations that you can do.

Sounds woody and not much character in a live performance but in a classical dark setting maybe ok. Just not preference in a live piano setting.

It could be there was no feeling and mechanical sounding JMO!
