I'm converting a SNG sequence to standard MIDI file, going through and changing the Korg programs to the closest general MIDI (gm) program equivalent. I ran into a snag trying to convert the drum track.
The original drum kit I used was Korg program K036 Standard Kit 2, the one that matched with the preset drum patterns I copied into the drum track. (As listed on the last page of the printed Voice Name List).
So I need to change the program to a gm drum kit. Unfortunately, the note-to-drum-part mapping for the Korg drum kit programs do not match the gm drum kits at all.
I thought, well I'll just repopulate the drum track by copying in new measures with preset drum patterns made for use with the gm drum kits. But of the 149 preset drum patterns, apparently none were made to work with gm drum kits.
Seems like an oversight / omission, or I am missing something. Maybe there's an easy way to remap Korg note-to-drum-part to gm note-to-drum-part? I suppose I could event edit the track replacing each note with the corresponding gm note for the same drum part. I'm not very good at playing drums on keyboard, especially when the drum kits keep getting rearranged!
Is there a collection of User drum patterns available that will work with gm drum kits?

I realize I'm swimming against the stream to find Korg preset or user drum patterns / arps that will work with GM drum kit programs.
Here's what I'll try:
1) Compose a song in the Triton sequencer using Korg preset drum patterns and Korg drum kits.
2) Write a copy of the song to Standard MIDI File (Format 1).
3) Create a mapping file that specifies note conversions from Korg-to-GM drum kit.
4) Run a Windows MIDI mapping program that generates a converted MIDI file changing the notes in the drum track according to the rules in the mapping file. https://github.com/markheath/midifilemapper
5) Load the converted MIDI file into Triton sequencer, changing drum track to use GM drum kit program.
You potentially end up with the best of both worlds - a GM version (generated) and the original Korg sequence (the master).
The risk is even if you get the note mapping / conversion right, the result won't sound as good because of the different samples and effects used in the Korg drum kits versus GM drum kits.
Update:
I did try this, and it worked as expected. Not perfect, but usable. And in my case, 3 different bass drums were used in the original Korg drum track, but GM only has 2 bass drums. So some differences are inevitable, lost in translation when mapping a kit with specific emphasis on providing variations for particular drum parts to the coarser mapping of a GM drum kit.
