ESX and guitar pedals

I'm routing out a mono part so I can run it through guitar pedals and then back in. The problem is that it sounds horrible (screechy and noisy (not in a charming way, not even Trent Reznor would think so), drums through a distortion pedal are not supposed to sound like that.) I've set it to "line" and I use regular guitar cables. Same problem occurs when I use a Boss Gt. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

let me ask another way: Have any of you successfully routed mono parts out and run them through pedals or an amp or the like and then sampled them? And had it sound good?

The answer is: No, cause it of course creates a feedback loop. :wacky:
