Kaoss DJ - controller - stuck in STB mode

kia ora,

my kaoss dj is working fine as a standalone FX unit thru my mixer + amp

but, when i plug it into my Mac - to use it as a controller alongside virtual dj - the unit displays STB on the lcd screen

i have tried to hold down A + B when powering it up via USB on my machine, however, that then displays IPL on the LCD screen (whatever that means)...

any advice would be much appreciated.
