Question about pa5x SD card?
Hi.
My question is, Do I need to format the SD card after the installation?
Cheers,

I formatted mine in my 5X.
My Windows 11 PC saw the card OK and after transferring the files onto the card my 5X had no trouble reading the card.
So play safe Format it in your 5X just do follow the instructions that are in the manual as it is easy to drop the card into the internals of the 5X

Do we really need a SD card for the PA5X? If I have a large USB what would be the purpose of using a separate SD Card? It would be no faster than a USB or is there some special system requirement to have one installed?shakuman wrote:Done! many thanks to all of you.Biggles wrote:I formatted mine in my 5X.

Korg is nice enough to give you the capability and option. With my Pa4x it came with a hard drive which I hardly used because of the size and convenience of USB. The option of the SD card also was offered but I only used it for backups. But like I said it is nice to have the option. Just like memory. Some people use it all up and are asking for more. I didn't fill mine, but it is nice that they offered the option if I needed it. It is really just person preference on how you want to use it.
So no, the SD card doesn't have to be installed if you don't want it. Make it the way you want it. That's what I and everybody else does.

The answer is not straight forward. There are instances when SD card is required. For example developers of localized sound resources, wanting to protect their IP often rely on the the SD card for decrypting the resources. I had the PA900 that came with some Indian tones, and it needed an SD card with the secure keys to be inserted at all times, to be able to decrypt and play the sounds.ExTyrosFan wrote:Do we really need a SD card for the PA5X? If you are not using protected content, then most probably you will have no need for the SD card. Personally, I like the SD card because it stays in the keyboard and available for access without extra effort. It is very easy to lose the portable USB sticks and also inserting and removing them multiple times will eventually result in the USB port going bad (due to mechanical failure)
Re: Question about pa5x SD card?
Im running a 1TB SD card but it takes a long while to load, about the same as the Keyboard boot up time. Im sure i saw somewhere that it should be no more than a 32gb card so maybe that whyshakuman wrote:Hi.

I installed a 256 GB with no side effects. But like Antony said, with the size of files from the Pa5x for midi, mp3, songbook, backups, etc, 32Gb would probably last a lifetime. Certainly 64Gb. For a keyboard that's an enormous amount of storage space. Just for reference, I have a huge library of mp3s on my computer and it only takes up 1 Gb.

Re: Question about pa5x SD card?
You will never need in life time a mSD larger than 128GB , the only you need is the faster mSD that only Pa5X upper mSD slot supports.mabcomp wrote:I'm running a 1TB SD card but it takes a long while to load
And the faster 1TB mSD of genuine manufacturer costs over 300 $ !!!
Contrary to Pa4X that motherboard do not support SATA port and for HD it has an extremely slow HD to USB2 converter ,
Pa5X supports USB3 port and upper mSD slot can support very fast new mSD up to 1TB.
Except of case of commercial Localized encrypted samples mSD & USB drives are exclusively used as storage media.
Hope this helps

Antony, I see you upped the ante on the needed size of mSD. But my point is valid for as you said USB and mSD are only used for storage and most storage type data files are very small on music keyboard platforms. For me, even on my Oasys which stored the OS and all the sound files on it, and I had all the additions, I never used more than a 3rd of the 40 Gb drive space. That is only to say 40 Gb is a huge amount of storage space. The new multisamples that are being created are getting larger and larger, so that may make a difference.

Kronos boot SSD contains OS , all Bin files of factory Rom samples all factory EXs plus all third party EXs and custom samples
and despite that , a 60Gb SSD is already enough to host all them !
Pa5X uses internal motherboard Nand Ram for all above and custom loaded samples and nothing external is needed after
loading custom samples , all are written internally and will be pre-loaded in Ram while booting.
Small <1Gb Korg Disk and mSD do not participate in any OS or data or samples storage , its a pure general purpose storage
media and not really needed at all !

My Oasys only has a 40 Gb drive and like the Kronos it contained all you mentioned. I was able to clone a second 40 Gb drive for backup in case the first drive died. I don't know if you could do that for the Kronos. My Oasys uses a PC mother board and a Pentium CPU so it acted like a PC . I was also able to purchase a second CPU of the same kind from a PC store if something went bad. The Oasys is a wonderful keyboard for it's time and I liked that it was repairable with over the shelf parts.AntonySharmman wrote:Kronos boot SSD contains OS , all Bin files of factory Rom samples all factory EXs plus all third party EXs and custom samples

But now I just use my Pa4x and Pa5x so all that is history. And none of the parts are over the shelf replaceable. I hate being at the manufacturer's total mercy, like the issue with the switches. But so it is.

But we were only discussing the size needed for the mSD and your information just proves the point that as I mentioned, for the Pa5x not much is needed.
