Styles for Classic, Orchestral, New Age, Movie Soundtracks

Post by epereirajle »

Hello all,

I recently bought a PA5X after 12 years with a Tyros 4.

Although I'm liking the Korg very much, I miss the styles more oriented to instrumental / classic / new age / Soundtracks from the Tyros.

The FS styles from PA5X are not so inspiring although I still din' try to tweak them.

I tried converting some "movie" styles from TY4 but the result was very bad, even when selecting new patches for the tracks, as the original tracks probably have some specific nuances/articulations that sound different when using other patches from Korg.

I got some better results with very old styles from Yamaha that are mostly GM.

Do anyone know where I can buy this kind of style for PA5X or maybe can gently provide one or two that are suitable for this kind of music?

See for example this youtbe video of an Enya song that I made some years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYSrIey8QTw

I have converted this style to PA (that was simple with no drums) and the result was actually nice and I will now convert the this choir voice from a library and I expect to reach a similar result.

By the way, I play the keyboard as a hobby, so most of the contemporary factory styles that came with the PA5x are nice but maybe more oriented for a gig or a party than to play at home.

I'm still learning about the PA5X but I already had some good results importing new samples to it. So with some time and work I expect to have the kb more adjusted to these songs that I like.

Best regards

I just wanted to make a very similar topic!
Count me on the question :)

I come from a (pipe) organ background and have dabbled with home organs in my youth (think Wersi, Electone). As "bad" as some of their styles are, they always have this orchestral epicness to them.

I find the same with the voices. The Pa5X shines on band instruments, but something like people play on an Electone seems hard to do. The sound is very treble-heavy and focused and lacks a lot of epicness.

Any pointers towards both styles and voices appreciated here, too.

EDIT:
Your video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9AWWYbymfY (Vangelis, Conquest of Paradise) is a perfect example. I'm dying to learn how to get that sound.

You're both right on that , Pa5X is mostly focused in band and solo instruments , still have some Epic/Film scoring Styles
but as all workstations and arrangers are lacking of real Symphonic and Choir ensembles Sound Libraries that you have
to create yourself or explore the leader in this field WavesArt Development in a bellow topic

Hi, what I ended up doing to get a more orchestral voice style was use the Angel voice FS style as a base style. Then I replaced one of the tracks with a piano track from one of the ballad styles. I also deleted those weird sound effect noises . I may have also replaced the bass, in one of the versions and added a drum track to create a Xmas style.
I just used the copy /paste function to replace the tracks. Intro’s /endings have to be modified.

You also mentioned converting Yamaha styles, the newer factory styles don’t convert well. Tried it with my sx900 styles. I used to convert my old psr styles, they used to work reasonably well , but still a lot of work.
I’ve actually ended up using some style tracks from a psr style and copied them into a Korg style ie if I want a specific piano track for instance.

Worth familiarising yourself with the copy style track function in the Korg.
best wishes

Hi Adras, thank you for your reply.
Some internal styles from Korg are very nice and well tunned but some seem to be old and not very well equalized. Indeed I thought that the bonus styles from PA4X that are in the PA5x sound warmer with the PA4x equalization. But I play with headphones (a good one). Maybe with big speakers the new equalization of PA5X will sound better than the ole ones. But this i my personal opinion.
I chose the PA5X because I wanted to change to something completely new ater 12 years with Tyros 4 and I believe that the Genos2 would sound 60% similar to my Tyros4 (that I still own).
Well, since I like to create sounds and tweak styles, I will have a lot of fun with PA5X.
As an example, I just added the Enya kind choir voice samples and although I didn't adjusted it very well the result was not so bad. I used that style from Yamaha that is simple but matches with this sound.

Hi Antony, your libraries are very nice and I'm sure it is a great addition to PA5X.
At the moment I am more worried about the styles since I didn't explore the internal sounds of PA5X very well and I have some libraries with sounds I intend to import. But soon I will think about the Wavesart library. Thank you!

Riskibears, thank you for your reply. I will try do to as you said to the Angel Voice FS

I have aready tested the copy style track fuctnion and it worked very well. It is a good way of mixing tracks from different styles and get a completely new one. I am still knowing the styles from PA and selecting those that have one or more tracks that can be used to create a new one so I will use more this function. Thank you for your suggestion! :))

Hi again, what I actually do is load my target style ( ie Angel voice into style player 1, then load another style just say a ballad into player 2, lock them in sync.
then mute all the tracks in the ballad except for the piano, mute one of the tracks in Angel voice and play the 2 styles in sync.
Great way of auditioning how the style will roughly sound before going thru the copy function.

I’ve also tried that with some of the old Korg styles.
Ie load old style into player 1, mute just say drum track then load a PA5x same genre into player 2 and audition the PA5x drums with the old style. I try and copy the old style parts into the PA5x style rather than vice versa. Bit of trial and error.
Sometimes makes a style that sounds pretty bad, better by replacing a track.
Also tried that with converted Yamaha styles.

You could try using your converted Enya style with Angel voice ie the arpeggiated track. I think psr styles are based on 4/4 even when it shows a 6/8 or 12/8 time signature. Might give you a nice result.

Korg styles with a 6/8, 12/8 time signature work as per signature so won’t really work with a 4/4 style.

So if you need to use a style track with a 6/8 feel with a Korg 4/4 style
like Angel voice, you might need to get the track from a psr style.

Been a while since I did it, but from memory all I did was turn psr style into a .mid . I deleted all the tracks I didn’t need. Ie I only left my piano track.Changed the markers to suit Korg. Only takes a few minutes.
Imported it into the Korg as a style.
It allowed me to audition the 4 variations with Angel voice style as above. I then copied in the style parts as needed into Angel voice.
Have fun.

Thank you for your suggestion rikkisbears!

I'm not used with the 2 players yet and I usually use only the player 1, but mixing tracks from different styles using the 2 players is an excelent and easy way to make experiments before changing the styles, as you said!!

I will follow your tip and keep the newer style as the main one.
