I need some advice

Post by worth »

I recently had a back injury which means I am unlikely to take my pa4x out gigging anymore . I need a lightweight preferably arranger keyboard that has sequencer capacity . Would preferably have 76 keys but will survive on 61 .

Has to be light but also have excellent piano, electric piano and acoustic instrument sounds .

I don’t mind used instruments . Would even consider the Roland or Yamaha products . Won’t consider a Casio .

If you can suggest some suitable instruments that would be really helpful .

What I have done it's got a PA 1000 it's almost identical to the PA 4 I've laid it out identical to the PA 4 it has all the Px4 styles in it same sounds accept one or two strange ones.

In the keyboard is 7 lbs lighter then the PA 4 that might help you out.

or medeli akx10 at 20 pounds or 9.4 kg
and the keyboard does 90% of what the PA 4 or 1000 will do but a lot lighter me and a lot less money.

Hi Worth, Duby mentioned the Pa1000, you mentioned Yamaha, I have sx900 it is slightly heavier than pa1000 according to online stats.

Depends on whether you would want to learn a new operating system?

Personally I wouldn’t put my sx900 in the same class as my ex Pa4x.

Never owned a PA1000, but I never felt I was missing out with my pa800 years back.

Duby mentioned PA1000 and PA4x are quite similar.
best wishes

Thank you so much for your response . The pa1000 was on my radar but I was not even aware of the Medeli is new to me . Will need to do some research . Does it have a fully functional sequencer ?

I use the pa1000 on gigs. You can use same styles as pa4x. It has no ec5 port just assignable and Sustain. I like the built in speakers for monitors. Very good sounding speakers.

It is not an Arranger but at only 8lbs the Korg Kross 2 packs a big punch.

You might look at the following options.

Korg PA1000 (expensive, but closest to what you have.)

Roland E-A-7 (super light, easily programmable, allows for importing user samples) I own one of these.

Medeli AKX10 (much cheaper, but very programmable, allows for importing user samples). BTW, Medeli has been making parts for other manufacturers for years, so although they don't have an established track record of their own brand of arrangers, they've actually been in business for a long time. Also, I haven't seen any for sale in the USA, but they have an improved model called the Dante Zen which has more Turkish/Middle-eastern sounds and styles as well as (I believe) some upgraded features. I have a number of friends who have these and know some people who have been doing custom sampling/programming for it.

I'm not familiar with Yamaha's mid-range arrangers, but there should be an SX model or two that compares with the PA1000.

Good luck with your search.

I like the idea of the Melli because it is so light . But I am leaning towards the pa1000 because I just can’t be bothered to learn an entirely new operating system .

What would be a reasonable price to pay for a used but in good condition pa1000 in the UK ?

A new Pa1000 is about £1700

A&C Hamilton (my local store) have a second hand unit advertised at £1400.

In the UK the 1000 generally only became available new in about March 2018, I had bought a 700 in Sept 2017.

So the 700 is one you could also consider and A&C Hamilton also have these in stock new at £1050 and a second hand unit at £900. Now I know that they would not have offered more than £450 to buy back the 700 for that is what they offered me against a new Pa4x back in 2019, but I sold it on fleabay for considerably more.

Needless to say I did not buy my Pa5X from them but from Music Matters.

Good luck.

Hi worth, hope your back is easing a bit.

IIRC, the Medeli is more akin to the Yamaha OS than it is to Korg, so there’s that learning curve thing again. I’m not 100% certain on that, but something’s ringing a bell. Anyway, good luck with whatever you end up with.

Oh, just checked the video link posted upthread. Jeremy See calls the Medeli a “Yamaha clone”, so there ya go.
