TEMPO keeps fluctuating with External MIDI option

Post by FSalomon »

When I select external MIDI and let's say I chose tempo 100 from the DAW, the PA4x keeps changing to 99 then 100 then 101 and so on back and forth. Then I have to quantize in the DAW. Why is that?

Thank you.

Do you set the midi clock to internal or external?
Also double check the midi and audio latency compensation settings in the DAW just to make sure it's as it should be

That is a normal behaviour. The clock of the keyboard is not 100% the same and not 100% in sync with the DAW. I had and still have this 'issue' for every flagship Korg Pa Model on different PCs, OSes, DAWs, Audio Interfaces etc.

Correct me if I am wrong: the BPM of your DAW is send as a periodic signal, which does not represent the BPM of your keyboard. For example the periodic Signal from your DAW with a BPM of 100 could be a BPM of 99.7 in your keyboard or also 100.2. In general the MIDI clock is not a very stable signal and hence the "jumps" of 2 BPMs (here from 99 to 101)

This issues is pretty annoying when using effects which use the BPM such as the BPM delay. The fluctuating BPM result in a distortion like sound. So always keep in mind, when recording audio from the keyboard in slave Mode make sure you deactivate any effects that use the BPM.
