Beatles' "In My Life" double-speed piano?

Post by bbernardini »

Has anybody here ever come across a patch that successfully emulates the sound of the double-speed piano effect used in the Beatles' "In My Life", or have any thoughts on how to achieve it?

If it's of any help, there is a one oscillator HD-1 Program called "In My Life Harpsichord" on the Kronos 2, that was also available as a component (KRS07) of the "New Kronos Sound Pack", for the original Kronos and Kronos X. This sounds reasonably close to the harpsichord-like sound in the original Beatles song. I cannot see a Program of that name in the Nautilus Voice Name List but here are the options:

Option 1; it might be worth reviewing the harpsichord sounds on the Nautilus, to see if any provide a reasonable match.

Option 2; if there are no suitable sounds amongst the Nautilus Harpsichord Programs, then the following might be useful in getting some way towards the desired sound.

On the Kronos, in the "In My Life Harpsichord" program's HD-1 Osc 1 Basic tab screen settings, MS multisample/Wavesequence section, there are two entries (out of the 8 available slots). These parameters are, reading left to right:

Code: Select all

                                                 |Start| |Bottom|Xfade|
MS| Multisample/Wave Sequence |Offse|Rev|Level|Vel |Range| Curve
1 | Multi | EXs7 > 00009 Piano2.jp main5-R | off | | 127 | 001 | 127 | Layer
2 | Multi | ROM m > 00000 Acoustic Piano 1 mf -L | off | | 127 | 001 | off | Linear
Based on these settings, both Multisamples play simultaneously at all velocities. All the other MS slots (3 to 8) are set to off.

On the Kronos, EXs7 is a built-in EXs library entitled "SGX-1 Japanese C Piano mono".

The Nautilus doesn't have an EXs7 library, as such, but on the Nautilus, many of the samples from the Kronos' EXs1 to EXs7 sample libraries have been renamed, renumbered, and incorporated/consolidated into the Nautilus' ROM m and ROM s libraries. I'm not sure that the Japanese C Grand libraries were included in this sample porting onto the Nautilus, since the Japanese C Piano is sold separately as EXs317, but there may be suitable sounding bright piano samples in the existing Nautilus libraries.

On the Kronos "In My Life Harpsichord" program, IFX1 is a Multiband Limiter effect, and this is chained to IFX2 Reverb Wet Plate effect. MFX1 and 2 are both O-verb, and the TFXs consist of a St Tube PreAmp Modeling effect chained to the Stereo Mastering Limiter effect.

Option 3; EXs315 Kronos Preload Support for the Nautilus comes with a Voice Name List that includes Program p017 "In My Life Harpsichord", but it may well be that this also requires EXs317 to be installed to play correctly. Both of these EXs can be downloaded from the Korg Shop and installed on the Nautilus and played in Demo mode before purchase. EXs315, EXs316, EXs317, EXs318, EXs319 and EXs320 all have the same PCG data included in the package. If any of these EXs are installed in Demo mode, it will be possible to look into the parameters for Program p017 "In My Life Harpsichord" and see which samples are used in the Program, and to change them, maybe for samples in ROM, which will not play in Demo mode, since they were already pre authorised with the Nautilus purchase.
