MIDI split. Not possible???

Post by KrzysiekK »

Hello,

let's say I want to make a simple MIDI split:
- play part 1 (MIDI channel 1) in keyrange C-1 to B4
- play part 2 (MIDI channel 2) in keyrange C4 to G9

but it seems impossible to play *just these two parts* because I always get additional transmission on global MIDI channel (as stated in manual PG p.43 : "Messages will also be transmitted simultaneously on the global MIDI channel."). Wow, what's the reason behind this "feature"? Can I completly bypass tranmission on global MIDI channel? Unless the only thing I can think about (to solve this problem) is to set global MIDI channel to 16 and filter it somehow in target module. LOL.

Thanks,
Krzysiek

You can't control seperate Midi channels on the same Keynote range,the splits don't work like that,you can split/Layer up to 8 Timbres(Combi Mode)and 16 Timbres Sequence mode,for splits and layers,but they all must be assigned to the same Midi channel,the Triton isn't able to transmit data on seperate Midi channels like that its only on the Global Midi channel,or the Track channel on the seq tracks

so you can split the Keyzones for sure and have your seperate instuments laid out across the keyboard,but in order for them to sound they need to be assigned to the Global Midi Channel,in Combi Mode you can however split the Channels for external Sequencer or Midi Keyboard reception,just not internally,with seq Mode you simply have a single sound on its own Midi channel and just select the desired track number to play it,or you can combine several Tracks on Keyranges as splits or layers as long as they're assigned to the same Midi channel,this doesn't have to be the Global Midi channel,as long as they are grouped together via a Single Midi channel number,you can use any of the 1-16 channel numbers for this

combi mode doesn't work like that because there is no way of changing the track selection.the rception of the sounds is always on the Global Midi channel

this is how you would have to setup your split

- play part 1 (MIDI channel 1) in keyrange C-1 to B4
- play part 2 (MIDI channel 1) in keyrange C4 to G9

For that type of operation to trigger midi channels individually on the same Note range you would need a dedicated Midi controllor that is able to split its keybed into seperate Midi channel zones as well as Keyzones,Triton however isn't capable of doing this Internally

Thank You Kontrol49 for your explanation. I'm not sure we understand the problem in the same way. I mean - everything works fine for me regarding MIDI splits/layers (in combi mode of course), the only annoying thing is that there is always additional transmission on global MIDI channel of whole C-1 to G9 range.

Some examples:

1.
GChn = 1
Splits: Program1 - C-1 to B4 (MIDI Chn = 1)
Splits: Program2 - C4 to G9 (MIDI Chn = 2)

when I press C3 key, I get only one NOTE ON/NOTE OFF message transmitted on the MIDI channel 1 (because global channel and program channel are the same)
when I press C5 key, I get tranmission of two NOTE ON/NOTE OFF - one on channel 2 (which is Program2 channel) and one additional on channel 1 (which is global channel) - this ruins idea of the split, because in fact - in this case - Program1 is transmitted in whole keyrange

2. GChn = 2
Splits: Program1 - C-1 to B4 (MIDI Chn = 1)
Splits: Program2 - C4 to G9 (MIDI Chn = 2)

this is similar to 1. The difference is that in C-1 to B4 I get two NOTE ON/NOTE OFF (channels: 1 and 2) and in C4 to G9 I get only one NOTE ON/NOTE OFF tranmission (channel 2).

3.
GChn = 3
Splits: Program1 - C-1 to B4 (MIDI Chn = 1)
Splits: Program2 - C4 to G9 (MIDI Chn = 2)

this is the only possible solution (i.e. GChn is other than Program1/Program2 channel) to get real split. But channel 3 must be filtered out in ext. module.

Best regards,
Krzysiek
