New R3 Vocoder Program
I've just spent many hours working on a new Vocoder program voice for the R3 that works much better for me than any of the factory presets. I've named it HyperVoc.
My primary goals were:
Vocal clarity for all octaves
Initially dry effects
Knobs assigned to the most useful parameters to color the sound
Maintain polyphony
Envelopes that match vocal patterns
Pure Vocode-no source mix-but quick knob assigns to add vocal mix
There are 8 parameter knobs quickly accessible, four when you select the program and four others after pressing the VOCODER button. I chose the parameters carefully for the most impact.
I'd be happy to share it. Send an email to xmlguy at my hotmail account with R3 HyperVoc in the subject and I'll send it to you. Just promise to post your opinion and comments about it here, so that I can use the feedback. I only like a couple of the Vocoder presets, so I want to replace the others with more useful ones. I know I want to do a good Talk Box program for guitar/bass/external direct input.
Here's a tip for using the R3 vocoder. You aren't limited to only the 8 programs under the Vocoder [F] bank. You can press the Vocoder button after selecting any other program to try it out. Although the vocoder might not sound good or produce any sound with these other programs, many do sound great, so try them for yourself.

I discovered that trick for using the vocoder with any patch as well. I will gladly take a listen to your patch. I've been working on one or two myself, but nothing noteworthy yet.

Edited: I got the program. It sounds like a classic vocoder-clear and concise without a lot of effects on it. I think it will be useable-I'll be testing it out on a live gig in a couple of days. Stay tuned...

I'll enjoy hearing how it worked for you!
The first assignable knob adds a chorus to thicken the sound, but should still remain understandable so long as other effects remain dry.
I think that's basically where most vocoder patches go awry - too many layers of simultaneous effects muck it up. Vocoding is cool by itself. Effects should be carefully evaluated as to the impact in a live performance when there's plenty of other sound that you need to cut through in the mix. And if you start dry, the impact is greater when you selectively add individual effects later. If you start wet, then there isn't much contrast when you shift effects.

New R3 Vocoder Program
Thanks for the program xmlguy! I finally got around to trying it out, and it's definitely a keeper. Much better than any of the presets if you want audible speech that happens to sound like a robot. I'll link to the song I'm using it with once it's ready. The high pass filter knob is good to hone the sound.
