using microkorg with virtual instruments

Post by voiceone »

I have searched the forum, tried to understand the manual, but am still lost. I would like to use my microkorg as keyboard for my virtual instruments that I have. I have figured out sort of how to do it, but only way I can do it is if I turn the volume control down on the korg all the way, so the unit does not play what ever preset is on at the time. The volume of the virtual instrument is very low then. Is there a way to load up a virtual instrument, use the microkorg as the keyboard to play? I am thinking there must be a setting I have not tried yet.

You need to set the microKorg to only transmit MIDI data and not use it.
Page 49 of the manual states:
MIDI "LOCAL" setting when connecting an external MIDI
sequencer or computer
If notes are sounding doubled when the microKORG is connected to an external
MIDI sequencer or computer, turn the Local setting off (MIDI "LOCAL" OFF).
(➝p.51)
If the microKORG is connected to an external MIDI sequencer or computer, and the
Echo Back setting of the external MIDI sequencer or computer is turned on while
the microKORG's Local Control setting is also on, the performance data generated
when you play the microKORG's keyboard will be sent to the external MIDI
sequencer, and will also be echoed-back to sound the microKORG's tone generator.

Page 51 states:
LOCAL [OFF, ON]
Switch the local on/off setting.
OFF ( ):
With this setting, controllers such as
the keyboard and modulation
wheel will be internally disconnected
from the tone generator section.
This setting prevents notes from
being sounded in duplicate when a
sequencer is connected and the performance
data is echoed back from
the sequencer. (Echo back is when
the performance data transmitted
by playing the microKORG is retransmitted
back to the microKORG
from the sequencer.)
ON ( ):
Select this setting when you are using
the microKORG by itself

Turn Edit Select Knob (two big black knobs) to MIDI (right under GLOBAL in white rectangle)

Turn 2/Resonance knob to OFF (button is top right of unit in row of 5 knobs)

I don't know how turning down the volume on the MicorKorg also affects the volume of the VST or should I say your host sequencers' output. maybe I misunderstand...

Thanx for the reply.. the docs for it are confusing to me... but you narrowed it down and I should be able to use that.. .I appreciate it. As for the volume... the output of the microkorg being set to zero, makes the virtual instrument I have loaded lower in volume.. I can increase gain in the track which is what I have been doing, but would like to not have to do that.. your guidelines should help on that.
