2 quick questions...again!

Post by princeali »

Hi I have 2 other questions about the Korg M3. First, how can we set the velocity so everytime we press a note it plays at, for example, velocity 127? It is handy when I am playing my drums on the keyboard. My second question is about the M3 editor. Is the M3 editor the only way to work with the M3 in a sequencer? For example can I make the whole beat with the Korg M3 and then mix it and record the vocals in Pro Tools without using the M3 Editor? I am wondering how do they work in professionnal studios...thanks in advance!

In answer to your second question: You can use the M3 with any software sequencer program such as Sonar, Live, Cubase without having to use the M3 editor at all.

Just assign a relevant midi track to the M3 MIDI output device in the programs setup pages.

Live for example sees the M3 through the M3 midi output device.

Switch on your M3 and let it boot first and only then start your program. Thos is essential on a PC for example so the system can see any midi inputs / devices that are attached before your run your program.

First, how can we set the velocity so everytime we press a note it plays at, for example, velocity 127
If we under "velocity" understand different response to strength of pressure applied to keys with you fingers, than velocity is adjusted in:

1. global mode, where you set velocity curve, from a) keys are maximally sensitive to velocity to b) keys are insensitive to velocity (velocity curves 1 - 8, and 9 with M3's update)

2. program edit mode where you set numerous filter and amp parameters to be sensitive to velocity in some extend or to be insensitive to velocity. To avoid velocity impact to sound in this mode, you have to set all velocity values to zero.

3. in global mode - drum kit setup menu - each drum sample is set to sound on it's own velocity so you meddle there also to assign all drum samples in one kit, or in all kits you are using, to sound at their full velocities (127). Also in sequencer in step recording mode you assign different velocities but now I'm going to wide...

First of all, by choosing most insensitive velocity curve in global mode you'll override velocity settings done in other modes. Probably not completely, but you want be able to hear any oscillations.
It is handy when I am playing my drums on the keyboard.
I'm not saying you are wrong to take this approach because I don't know what are you trying to achieve. That's why I explained to you your possibilities without judging you at first. But.

Drums are supposed to be played with different velocities. It's the nature of instrument itself. Have you ever played live drums, acoustic ones? Can you really be so sure you'll hit every time with same strength? Do you want your drum phrases to sound completely automatic and lifeless?

Even arranger keyboards with it's preset drum tracks simulate natural drum behavior. Why would you try avoid this in workstation?

For drum programing you should learn how to use the 8 pads. You can define which note they trigger, on which MIDI channel, and you can set them to play a specific velocity value or be fully dynamic.

I think this may be what you're really looking for - try it.

if you plan to use this function with sequencer, you can set velocity to a fix number for each note in each track (edit mode)
YAMAHA W5 + TRITON proX (exb MOSS / exb PCM01 / exb PCM05 / exb SCSI / 64Mo) + M3-73 No.000187 v2.0 (exb Radias v2.0 / exb M256) + DOEPFER LMK2+
