Zero 8 and Mackie control

I have a zero 8 and a mackie control.
well, its actually a logic control but with the updated firm ware,,
any ways,,
I would like to use the zero eight to control mix groups coming out of Ableton live made up of several tracks bussed to the same out put.
I would like to control the transport and each channel in side these groups using the Logic/Mackie control.
So far i have tried plugging the LC/MC into the midi in/out on the Z8.
The LC/MC is receiving from live and updates its faders and LCD accordingly but i am unable to have the LC/MC talk back to Live.
I have tried every combination of midi channels 1 through 3 in Lives preferences, so far only Plug 1 set as the output has any effect,, none of the plugs used as inputs work at all.

Any one have a tip how to get this up and running?
