SX slicer capabillities
hi,
i´ve been trying for quite some time to figure out how to reorder the slices of the slice part korg sx has.
searched the net and forums but no one seems to mention it.
if sx is not capable of it...well...i am fond of it - but one of the major beat composing tools is then missing and makes the slicer no more than a slightly more advanced gate/stretch part. which is of not so much use frankly.
as a groovebox and live tool i presumed i will be able to change slices on the fly, make rolls and complex breaks.
sure you can dump each slice as oneshot but that renders the slicer even more pointless.
am i missing something here?
any way around this?
best,
d

I havn't really found much use for the slice part either, just like you said. It doesn't seem to do anything useful (please, someone show me Im wrong!)
But, if you take one of the one short parts, or one of the keyboard parts and assign a loop sample to them, you can place some triggers and set the start value and gate time to play pieces of the loop. You can edit the start positions via step edit and toggle the triggers on and off to reorganise the loop quite quickly, with the added advantage that you can often adjust the start time a small amount so the hits dont exactly fall on the 16th notes, giving very groovy timing.
It's not exactly what you are after, but it's also a lot more chaotic (and pleasantly surprising) than just rearranging the pieces.
You can also assign slices of your loop to the one shot pieces, and rearrange them by connecting the midi out to the midi in, and using a keyboard part on channel 10. This means the pitch of the keyboard part will trigger different samples. Almost what you wanted? it's also possible to play different oneshots now by using the arpeggiator and slider.
Making complex breaks on-the-fly is not currently a feature in ANY hardware I know of. Don't be down on the ESX cos it didn't make you Aphex Twin overnight. Perhaps you could try software tools like LiveSlice and SupaTrigga to smash up your loops in rythmic ways, if esx isn't doing what you presumed it would.

hi magpie,
you seem to understand exactly what i am after.
the methods you mentioned are helpful too.
the first suggestion is something i tried myself, or similar anyway and although interesting, the results were a bit too chaotic time wise.
the second method sounds like a very, very good idea.
if i understand- you are suggesting routing a melodic part to the drum section and have it trigger different slices. having the arpeggio and working in double time could be very cool.
so the each one shot part will react upon a certain note pitch right?
i guess i could use one of the mx synth parts to program the drum parts on sx that way.
let me know if i got this right.
as far as more complex beats and hardware go - in general i guess you are right. but there are some nifty machines like elektron and virus. different price category ofcourse but still...

i am in no way dissapointed with my electribes - it´s just that some minor niggles prevent them from being far more capable boxes.
can´t help the feeling that they could do alot more with further os development. i imagined i could just press the step i wanted and change the slice as same as one shot parts - how hard could it be to program?
when introduced they were around 800€. not much cheaper than MPC1k
korg is a big company and products like this seem to be willingly forgotten by the developers - they naturally move on - which is again sad because the electribes really have such a cult potential.
and on the other hand there´s elektron which tries to squeeze every ounce of the cpu. they react to the consumer input and really tap into the cult thing.
not to sound to harsh - the limitations are also the part of the MX SX magic and you find yourself being very creative. the interface becomes transparent and ideas flow. that´s what is important.
not to go on about it.
tips:
dbxblue is a tool of choice for mashing things up.far more control than supatrigger. reaktor L3 ensamble is cool to.
when using the slicer i almost always set up pitch modulation which gives me some nice nonrepetitive grooves.
sorry for a long post and thanks for your input.

I've used a machinedrum a lot, and it hasn't got anything like the loop slicing capability you described either. It behaves pretty much like the esx regarding setting the start point for a sample loop. Overall they have an amazing design and the workflow is completely brilliant; the sequencer is far better designed overall, but I thought the actual sound engine in it was pretty narrow, and the sampling of the UW feels very much an afterthought. All machines have their annoying small quirks, the electribes may have more than most, but they are super fun machines all the same.. I've been expecting to see machinedrum-clone midi only boxes appearing, but so far nothing yet.
I dont know if the tip of routing the keyboard part back to the oneshot drum parts is going to be practical, I just came up with that from he top of my head. But if you set up each one shot with a loop slice, you can at least sequence all of it from one part, just move the triggers around and set the pitch to select the drum trigger. You can play it like a melody part aswell. If you experiment more with this idea and find it of practical use then please let me know
cool video by the way. Dedicated hardware for that sort of thing will arrive soon I guess.

as soon as i read the post i tried it out.
i don´t have much time right now but in five minutes literally the results were exactly what i was after.
this is the test

routing from mx is better because you can turn on roll function and mess with the arpeggio - the release ribbon controlls the rolls. lowest value is a normal beat. higher values is autechre stuff.
very promising imo.
creative thinking on your side.
thanks alot.

Wow, are those mp3s live and unedited? totally nuts, I love the second one. Impressive stuffMS-DOS wrote:as soon as i read the post i tried it out.

two fingers. arp and ribbon. and recorded in audacity.
just these two takes.i am giddy of the potential but have a deadline to attend to.
quite mad isn´t it?
a whole new way of working opened up for me.
the mp3´s are out of control a bit but it will be fun submitting the sx.
your idea mate.
brilliant.

DUDE that sounds AWESOME!!! Thanks for telling this!MS-DOS wrote:two fingers. arp and ribbon. and recorded in audacity.

So did i get it right? You can plug a midi cable from ESX MIDI OUT to its MIDI IN? Like a loopback? And then use a keyboard part on channel 10 to play the slices? this is crazy!!! I know using an external controller would be best but i dont have any! And can you also record this jammings to a pattern in the esx? man this is ace! it should become a sticky! thanks!
dunno if its exactly what you want, but i just assign timeslice parts to different one shots then resample.....though after a while this can get a lil bit much for the built in memory....if you had the resources 2 by esx1' s would be good....one specifically for messin with your own time slices assigned to drum parts, and maybe other things.... and the other one to be used as normal.....I've got a few issues with the esx as well, though i still love em....
.....: End Of Transmission :.....
nice one didn't think about that. Well there we go.Etherium wrote:dunno if its exactly what you want, but i just assign timeslice parts to different one shots then resample.....though after a while this can get a lil bit much for the built in memory....if you had the resources 2 by esx1' s would be good....one specifically for messin with your own time slices assigned to drum parts, and maybe other things.... and the other one to be used as normal.....I've got a few issues with the esx as well, though i still love em....
But timeslice is a VERY useful feature if you don't think it is, explore it more. You can create very cool sound scapes with just that part.
emx to esx. the old in-out-in-out.
hugh. long time i posted this...
illustration is my main vice so i didn´t mess with the tribes for a while.
i am at the parents house so i can´t try it out but as i recall it went like this:
i used the mx as a sequencer/controller and sx for the samples.
idea was to do breaks on the fly idm like. it was weird to me how the slicer on the sx was..well crappy.using the arp on the mx i think i triggered the slicer in many ways. oh yes.:)even the ribbon thingie has a effect on the sample lenght.
if i recall correct it wasn´t necessary to drop one shots of the loop on the single hits.i used the slicer with the same channel as my mx active synth part...
and that´s that. the two loops recorded were ruff test.
there are many possibillities to tighten things up in more musical hands than mine.
so you simply use one channel of the mx to sequence the sx slicer part.
like i said. some time since i played with the but it went something like that.
really happy if it sparked some creativity for you...
warm and fuzzy.
