April 08 - georgeinar - Cosmic Boogie

Post by georgeinar »

This is a cross between Rocky Horror and I don't know what else. It was so cliche and straightforward that I tried to change it up somewhat and stay fun in the lyrics.

You are such a talent!
I immediately loved the grovve, then you made me laugh with the lyrics, the structure is way cool, and of course, as always the production is spot on.
I really admire the way you totally changed the feel, and were able to maintain the flavor.
Well done George, no nits from me, I love it.

I never heard such a crappy song, I didn't expect something like this from you George, the mixing and mastering are awful, not to talk about the eq and effects. Rythm isn't good enough and the drums seem not to be quantize, did you play it by hands? Ok, 1st of April... :P
Great work as usual! this is a great add to your next album!

There are some constants with George-

1. The arrangements are ALWAYS great and very bright!
2. Lyrically there is rarely a stutter. Always great and with just the right amount of humor.
3. Creative as hell!

George you outdid yourself. Another great track. Well mixed and produced. Specifically your choice of sounds really stick out. I like the way it gives the feel of a lot of voices singing with you. This kind of song really deserves some crazy production of a video with it. Very serene picture you have associated with it on your Soundclick page. Funny. 8)

While you stay within a genre your songs are vastly different and in listening to last month's OSAM from you I really have come to appreciate how well you have developed your craft.

I wish I could find something critical to add to the mix, but I can find nothing about it I don't like.

Just brilliant George,
Great lyrics, and the arrangement is so clean, and I have that every new song is different, and unique. I know you've mentioned before the work that goes in to these, and it shows in the end result. Love the solo, it's a great end result!
I'll be listening to this again, as there are so many under currents that I've missed tonight.

George, this one is absolutely top quality!!
Great production, great sounds, not just a single detail has been forgotten!
You may remember that I've always loved your tunes, but quite often put a note about sounds, that should have been more powerfull...In that tune all sounds so perfect to me...!!!

BTW, not I'm at the office, listening through iPod earphones...I'll take the time to listen to it at home.

Congrats, very good piece of music!

Just wanted to add...
You should have to listen to these two italian bands, I consider them one of the best blenders of rock and electronic music:

Subsonica
BluVertigo

Great song!
Altho the genre is not what i´d listen to every day, but the song was so well done. Great structure to it and the mix is awesome.

One of my tricks was the accidental discovery of the vocoder effect using simply noise as the driver. I was like, hey that sounds like a background chorus, so I will use that now and then when I need a fatter chorus of voices. I see that is what some people use for snarly lead vocals on industrial tracks and some metal stuff.

Well, my sister went nuts for this song. She's into this thing called ilike.com where you share musical discoveries, and here's her email to me:
George, I sent "Cosmic Boogie" to all my friends on ilike ( I have 109 friends). So far I've got a few people thanking me and saying they liked it. You should put more songs on your page.
Here's one of the responses I got - "This IS cRaAZEeee! Sounds like Tone-Loc on helium with a casio. Yet.... I like this wack smack.... Oh Yes... I do Thanks yo :~)".

Now I don't pretend to 'get' this online lingo, but wack smack it is. I'm somewhat taken aback by all this high praise over such a simple work. I even felt I was cheating to take a basic rock and roll structure and slap on some sci fi glam lyrics. I was wanting to get way more clever here, but lately I've been staying more sparse and simple. After I did the verse and chorus I thought, hey if this is a boogie I better do some straight up boogie and throw in the honky tonk piano and do some leads. This is really helping me to get this feedback from yourselves who are not only great musicians and producers but also know what you like to listen to. As Pecca said, it's not what he listens to normally, that can be said for many or us here sharing, our styles are so different. Yet as we get to know each other so well, we've developed a refined taste for each others styles that when we hear one another performing, we can simply appreciate the achievement each has made in her/his own right. so thank you for taking the time to listen and comment. It's the feedback that keeps us plugging for the next tune.

VOCODER effect! Ah! That is totally cool. It works. It would have been great to have some live sounds as well, but this works well in a pinch. The TE has a built in vocoder, but I have to admit that I do very little that would ever call for such an effect.

... maybe the B-52's at their best ? ;-) With wack smack synths !

I loved it here, it tickled that same part of me that loves the B-52's and David Devant and His Spirit Wife (check 'em out!). It's that same of kind vibe of fun/fantasy songs, which are well crafted. So many great bits, the honky-tonk piano, the little bit where the solo plucky sound bridges between parts, the intro and the outro ... I can't even imagine getting all these details right in one piece in a month.

Great production too, it's just crystal clear and everything is just sitting in exactly the right spot, damn impressed.

Anyways ... I am at work at the mo, so forgive brevity ... just wanted to throw in some initial comments.

Daz, you got it. I knew there were other influences here, I do think the B52s are partly to blame for this wack smack. I must admit, part of my success here is to believe in my TS as I am doing a lot less slicing and dicing on the pc and letting the TS do the majority of the sounds. It's so much easier to tweak in midi than in wav files. And since I've never mastered midi on the pc I was applying effects in soundforge track by track and then combining them in audacity to see how they sounded then back to soundforge and vst's until after many many hours I would get a decent sound, but on the TS I can do this tweaking and then simply do the mastering via pc. I'm using the pc effects now mostly for anything that needs something very unusual that the TS can't do, like guitar emulation/distortion stuff (I now have Trash for that). But now that I'm doing more electronica style stuff, the TS itself seems perfectly suited and I'm the most proficient there anyway. The vocals of course are squashed to death on the pc until I can stand them. Thanks so much for your comments. I believe you all have enjoyed this song more than I as I found it a bit on the simple side, but maybe that makes for a classic, as when you think of your favorite songs they are usually very classic in some way or other.

... plus you've heard it about 500+ times in the last month, but for us it was completely new piece of music we've never heard before :-)
