New tubes: tutorial!

Post by Sarrova-Q »

Just wanted to make a little tutorial for all EMX/ESX users who want to upgrade their Electribe but don't really know how to start.
I made this a new topic because this is only about how you have to change the tubes. For info about wich tubes and what sound they make, please post in the other topic:

Good pictures, shows how simple it is to replace and balance the tubes. The only thing I would change it the "small circles" and the white circles graphic. I know what you mean but I can also see how someone would misinterpret that and try to unscrew/twist them out.

Cool stuff man , this is very important as you're making very clear for ppl to see that it isnt a difficult or dangerous thing to do to your machine .

You should change this to a "sticky" if u can .

also on the screws and compression/power thing .. i agree , they seem to hav a fine effect on what the tubes do ..... i dont know what but i know how to set em for what i like .

What sorta improvements Gt's make to the esx ?
Ive never heard something on an esx that sounded "pro" im afraid .

I made a demo of the EMX and the ESX with the new tubes.
mp3 conversion is limited to 128kbps so a lot of the details and harmonics get lost, but I can tell the tubes really make a huge difference.
My sound is MUCH better. Tight bass, lovely highs and much less muddy. Go get some tubes people!

EMX demo is Dance / Electro-House. I pushed the filter drive high to make my tubes scream. I hope you can hear the improvement in sound
ESX demo is Minimal

You can hear it at soundclick:

@ reddone: how do I make a sticky?
@ anselmi: don't know the difference but please post questions like this in the other topic. I don't want to make double topics.

Thx

The site you found is located in Israel (Tel Aviv / Haifa). I guess that's not what you were looking for?
My tubes were 29 € / piece. I bought them in germany ( http://www.thomann.de ) and they ship to every European country.
Another good store is musicstore ( http://www.musicstore.com ). I'm not sure wich stores are best in America.

ps: can someone send me a PM how to make a sticky of this topic?

Those tubes are for sale on sweetwater.com if I recall correctly. Likely the easiest place to buy those if you are in North America.

From what I've seen, standard price for a single JJ ECC83S should be around US$10 give or take. I made the switch and the difference is huge.

Thanks Sarrova-Q for the post. Yes it is as easy as it looks.

A hello to all who have made this information possible. I just ordered a pair of "NEW TUBES". GT ECC83's for my ESX. I will post in a couple of days with my findings. I recently filled my ESX with new samples and waveforms so I'm pretty excited about having the tubes upgraded. A whole new machine? POSSIBLE?

Its not really a tube test program.
I used the level meter in Apple Logic to check the balance.

That's what i'm wondering.I just got an SX and i'm thinking about getting some tubes.I put my GTs from the MX in the SX to see what the difference is.The SX already sounded good with the tube at max.It sounds better with the GTs,louder and clearer so i guess you could say it has more presence.Would the jjs would be better suited to the SX though or is the difference nominal unless you go for some of the more expensive tubes?

Has anyone tried the GTs and the JJs with the SX?
