Anyone here moved from Yamaha to Korg?

Post by chony »

Anyone here moved from Yamaha to Korg? I'm seriously considering the move, but am extremely nervous. I right now own a Tyros 2 (used to own the Tyros 1, and before that the 9000, 8000 etc), and side by side with it, I have a friend's Pa1x for a few days.

I still haven't completely worked out the capabilities of the Korg, but I have found that although it has a great sound it has quite a few disadvantages compared with the T2.

Are there any Yamaha to Korg converts here? Could you please tell me all the things I'm going to miss out on if I move to Pa2x? Have you found it to be worth it? I want to make an informed decision.

Thanks,
Chony

Chony, I moved from a PSR3000 to the Tyros2 and now to the PA2xPro. The single biggest disadvantage from my point of view moving to the Korg is the lack of the many 3rd party styles avaliable for Yamaha. I really do miss the variety. The fills aren't always as smooth as Yamaha boards.

Otherwise I have no regrets moving to the PA2xPro, I'm very happy with it for the following reasons:

1. 76 keys
2. Physical sliders
3. Vocal Harmonizer
4. 76 Keys
5. Songbook feature. I find this feature to be fantastic for live performance.
6. Nice keyboard action I can comfortably play it for a piano solo or 2 when called for.
7. Size to weight ratio. This board is easy to transport 39 pounds is very managable.
8. Built in MP3 player/recorder
I'm a part time musician, I know I'm just scratching the surface of what this keyboard can do.

In the fantasy world of keyboards, I would own the Korg, Tyros2 and a Roland G70. Each have their strong points and great features, but overall the PA2xPro is the board for me.

Hi Chony,

By comparison with Yamaha, in my opinion, the biggest disadvantages moving to Korg Pa products are:

Lack of style libraries on the 'net
Lack of sound libaraies on the 'net
Multiple user styles and user sounds cannot be loaded from several sources (because the linkages from styles to sounds get broken and you end up with grabage being played on the keyboard).

These things are related. Because Korg have no effective solution to the sound library problem, very few musicians develop styles and sounds. If any musician publishes anything, he/she gets complaints from the customers who can't load and play the stuff without conflicts arising from currently loaded styles/ user sounds.

Potentially the Korg keyboards offer far more facilities than the Yamaha equivalents. But in my opinion, the ship is sinking for want of a ha'penny worth of tar.

More like pop songs

Post by a.schemkes »

Would it be right to say that Korg is more for the pop songs and the yamaha more for the entertaining songs.

No, the Korg Pa series has a very wide range of style for all purposes, perhaps a little light on non-Western music in the EU and USA versions, but there are different sound and styles savailable for each regional market.

Hi
I had a 740 then 9000 then Tyros 2 and made the switch to Korg PA800
In an ideal world I would say that I wish I could have a mixture of both instruments as Yamaha do some things better than Korg and vice-versa.
As far as quality of sounds is concerned there is little in it. However I would say Korg has the better piano and synth sounds but IMO a dreadful oboe!! Yams is far superior.. oh I miss my Yamaha oboe!
The strings on the Korg blow the Yamaha away! I have not heard better..
I found the Tyros 2 a pain when you were trying to find a simple up and down guitar strum (like on the 9000) it just didn't exist as Yamaha decided to get clever and gimmicky. There are no gimmicks with Korg.. I listen to live music and I have never heard a sax player breathe! The SFX on the Tyros2 are in a word pathetic! However some of the polished styles in T2 are excellent.
The build quality is much better with Korg, however the design could be improved. It just has the look of an average keyboard from Argos (until you play it!) It is fair to say it is easier to do some things on the Yamaha, for an example add FX on the fly where as Korg have a faster/easier save system. Both OS could have been made easier and if you find some things fustrating with Yamaha you will with Korg....I could write a list of improvements for both.
The other important thing to note is how much cheaper the Korg is than the Yam, but not in the sound department..

If I had to choose to have one or the other I would choose the Korg simply because you can do more with it. I would say the PA800 has more pizazz and the more professional unit.. However I feel I am really just waiting for the Korgyam PAtyros3....it's never going to happen is it?!?
Sorry I see you want to go to the PA2X not the PA800 but will leave this post for interest!

Yes you can, and no you won't unless you have a cunning plan to do it deliberately :-)

User styles linked to user sounds should only be shared with other people who will keep the user sounds in the same user locations as you. User styles and sounds are normally saved in favorites and/or user banks. The Pa keyboard does allow you to save your changes on top of factory styles and sounds but only if you deliberately unlock/ unprotect this facility. The default is that factory styles and sounds are locked/ protected.

Sweet, cool

I have Korg PA 800 and now, Yamaha psr S900. My experience is that Korg is more continental in its sound and a bit "neutral" I live in Scandinavia, and we really enjoy yamaha `s sweet, cool and rich sound. Especially to our Scandinavian style; "dansebandmusikk"
