Korg CX3 engine in M3?

Post by Arjan »

Hi,

A sales rep told me that the Korg CX3 (Hammond clone) is out of production and sure enough it does not seem to be available anywhere in Europe (I do see it in many US online shops though).

However he continued to tell me that supposedly the M3 includes the sound engine from the CX3.

Is there any truth to this? Nothing I have read on the M3 documentation supports his statement. Sure there are some (possibly great) organ sounds in the M3 and I wouldn't be surprised if you can actually use the faders as drawbars for some programs, but will it really sound the same as a CX3?

I'm looking for something to complement my Fantom X7 in terms of better organ sounds. I have tried several clones including Roland VK8, Hammond XK1 and XK3 but never the CX3 (nor the M3 in any serious manner).

However when I heard some online demo's

Rock Solo (mp3, 2.1MB)
Prelude (mp3, 1.41MB)
Katana (mp3, 1.76MB)

the CX3 sounded much better to my ears than the ones I had demoed. The comparison is not fair because I was listening through my studio monitors vs headphones (not my own unfortunately) in the shop but still.

I also checked out Native Instruments B4 software but the demo's where not inspiring, not my taste in sound or music at all. I would be using it for progressive rock so I'm looking for more of a Tony Banks sound (although I realize he didn't actually use a Hammond for a lot of his organ sounds). With most of the clones I found the overdrive to be way to harsh and digital and absolutely horrible when playing chords.

I'm actually wondering how much of the sound that I liked in the CX3 demo's was from the overdrive or leslie effect. Heck I'm wondering if wondering if any Hammond clone would satisfy my needs if when used with an actual tube pre-amp and a good leslie sim.

I've been debating getting a clone for over a year but have come no closer to a decission. And now there's the Fantom G which hopefully will have a Hammond-clone ARX expansion board so that's not making my decission any easier as I'm considering upgrading my Fantom X to a Fantom G anyway and I sure don't need more keyboards to haul around (already use three on stage).

This post has become way too long so I'll just stop now. Any information regarding my original question and other input welcome.

Thanks,
Arjan

Absolutely no truth to that. The M3 neither contains nor emulates the CX-3 in any way. There are some B3ish sounds in the M3, but it's clearly not capable of the things a true clone can do.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion. Another fine example of the ignorance of most sales people. It never ceases to amaze me how they can state things with total confidence that turn out to be completely untrue.

The CX-3 is a fine clone...it's the one piece of gear I'll never sell. Maybe you can find a used one.

We still sell the CX3 and BX3 in the US (and Canada I believe). It is not ROHS compliant so it can't be sold within the EU.

ROHS compliant CX3 successor, module?

Post by Arjan »

Jerry,

I actually sent an email to Korg UK asking if ROHS was the reason but haven't heard from them. Thanks for confirming that is indeed the case.

I suppose you are not going to tell me but is there any chance of an ROHS compliant CX3 follow up coming out? Or perhaps a module version? There is no module version of the CX3, is there?

Think the sales guy mixed up the M3 with the Oasys.

I really hope that future OS updates will include some sort of hammond and electromecanic emulation...
I think it's the only great feature lacking on the M3...
But I guess my desire will never see the light, or the Oasys will loose one of its strongest point against the m3

Hammond Sounds

Pardon my lack of knowledge - just got my M3 last week...is there anyway an organ program or combi sound could be written where the 8 sliders became a pseudo set of drawbars?

I would (and probably anybody else) appreciate if you would upload it to a public place and share with others also :) not just via PM

I'm sorry for my bad English. When I said "I hope I can upload soon" I was thinking about upload in the korgforums' section "Downloads".
Anyway, Now I have sent the file, and I think it will be upload soon. But if you want you can download from this link: http://www.eungria.com/musica/drawbar.zip
Greetings.
I will be waiting your opinions
