Quality of Mini-KP effects?

Post by Diametro »

Are they on par with the KP3?

What is the overall sound quality like of mini-KP ... again, comparable to KP3?

Hey Diametro, yes, I think they are on par, but I haven't played too much with my mini-kp because there's only a couple of the effects I like. Pretty much just the standard bandpass and filter effects are all I use. I like the efx on the SP-404 better, like the DJFX looper, the sub-osc and the radio sim.

But if there's specific fx you want me to compare, I'll be happy to do so side-by-side with my KP3.

No ... there isn't anything specific ...

Isn't the effects list about the same? Minus the sample-related effects, of course ...

I have two KP3s already but would still like some more ...

The mini KPs seem like a good idea because of the lower price and also the smaller size as well ...

I was just worried that sonically it's not in the same class as the KP3 ...

I didn't notice any problems with the sound quality of the mini-kp. I wouldn't be surprised if it used the same tech as the Kaosillator and was kind of a trial run for Korg production. For a DJ scenario, you will lose the cool lighted touchpad effects, since the mini-kp is visually boring while being great sonically.

But if you want to do an all battery powered rig, the mini-kp is perfect for that. That's why I bought my mini-kp, to pair with the Kaosillator, but I've ended up using the KP3 more because it's a better feature match.

I think I'd rather have more KP3s, since I think I could always use another 4 tracks of sampling in addition to the efx, particularly the way the KP3 uses flash. By crossfading between them, you could use one for loading samples and setting up the next track while the other is running the current live track.

I find loading samples to be way too tedious on the KP3 (although your suggestions a good one) ... But too much time for me ... that's why I got an SP-404 (all samples load almost instantaneously ... up to a gig, i think ... and it runs on batteries ... !!!

Well, I think I know what my next toy is going to be ... thanks ...

i sold my mini-kp because i couldn't stand the fact that it cuts the output gain to a half when not used in send mode. I guess it's because it runs on batteries - but i even did try with a 4.5v psu and still the unfiltered output was around half the original volume of the source....

so in the end I just bought a kp3 and i'm glad i did this!

mini-KP = 4 1/2 * out of 5

Yes, the 100 onboard effects are hi-fi and very musically useful, especially when used with a drum machine, which is how the mini-KP settled into my rig. I originally picked up the device to serve as a filter bank for my vintage preset synth, but after experimenting and tweaking, I found the most use in the beats dept.

And yes, there is a volume reduction issue to deal with, but if you run your rig through a mixer and send out a stereo pair from there, you can adjust the channel levels to compensate without distortion, so forth, in relation to your other instruments.

mini-KP = 4 1/2 * out of 5
