does anyone have a template file for Traktor? or an idiots guide to setting up the Z8 for use with Traktor?
I usually use Ableton for mixing but wanted to try out tracktor to see if it might be more suited to my needs (seems like it would be easier to adjust the songs, i.e. nudge them if they go a bit out of sync as sometimes warping in live can be a bit off and it's a killer to hand warp every song in a mix, especially live).
I usually have channel 8 set up as an audio track with Ableton so that I can cue through the mixer but I'm not sure what's the best way to set up Traktor...
what do you guys do? do you route the audio straight to the Z8 then mixing using the external mixer (not sure if this is even possible in MIDI mode) or do you guys use the Z8 to contorl Traktors own internal mixer? what tracks do you use for the master out and the preview out?
Sorry if these questions seem very obvious but I'm used to how easy it is to set up with ableton, and traktor is just confusing me, plus I'm used to the old way of just running a couple of 1210s into a mixer, all of this MIDI routing really melts my brain!!!!
Thanks
J

Re: help for traktor noob with Zero 8
I know this is what everyone says but the manual is a pretty good start. To get you started all you have to do is make sure in preferences you have the Zero 8 enabled in MIDI Preferences. After that its all about setting up your own mapping using the "Learn" function under MIDI mapping.jonnyboy wrote:does anyone have a template file for Traktor? or an idiots guide to setting up the Z8 for use with Traktor?
You can do either. You can select Audio/MIDI or just straight MIDI for each channel. Remember though if you use Audio/MIDI you will then have to setup Traktor for External mixing and set the proper outputs. If you use the Z8 as an external mixer you can just use the "CUE" but if you use internal, you have to make a button to "CUE" tracks and also to use the "Preview" option within Traktor.jonnyboy wrote: what do you guys do? do you route the audio straight to the Z8 then mixing using the external mixer (not sure if this is even possible in MIDI mode) or do you guys use the Z8 to contorl Traktors own internal mixer? what tracks do you use for the master out and the preview out?
In the beginning it is a bit overwhelming but start small to get yourself started. You really have to play with it and also get to the the Zero Edit software. I would say get acquainted with that first to tell you the truth, since you will have to do some edits to get it to play nicer with Traktor.jonnyboy wrote:Sorry if these questions seem very obvious but I'm used to how easy it is to set up with ableton, and traktor is just confusing me, plus I'm used to the old way of just running a couple of 1210s into a mixer, all of this MIDI routing really melts my brain!!!!

I'm currently still working on my tks file for Traktor (I'm sticking with 3.2 until Pro is usable), when it's finished I'll send it across, but this is the way it's going to work...
Chan 1-4 set to audio, EQ on I (filter).
Chan 5-8 set to MIDI, for controlling fx params. Cue button set to fx on/off (button 4 in T3.2). Cut/solo switch set to button 1 (so I can use for beatmasher, either as a switch, or just while I'm holding it down). A/B buttons on these channels are set to play instantly from a cue point, and set a cue point on the fly (so I can press B to set a cue as the track is playing, then hit A and it will instantly flip to that point). The A/B buttons I had to modify in Zero Edit for chan 5-8 to always transmit 127 when pressed (the default behaviour is 0/127).
Controller bank A (track selection)
1-4 sets deck focus.
5 scrolls through the tree. Pressing expands the tree view.
6 scrolls the browser list, pressing loads the selected track into the focused deck.
7 scrolls the browser list by a page.
8 highlights the search box.
Controller bank B (loops)
1-4 sets deck focus.
5 activates a loop of the preselected length
(I've not worked out the rest of this bank yet, as changing the loop size by twisting the knob both ways doesn't seem to work, so I reverted to keyboard controls for looping)
Controller bank C (cue points)
I'm going to set this bank up for storing/recalling cue points. I'll have the knobs assigned to beatjumping, probably.
The good thing is, even in this unfinished state, I can do most things from the Zero8 without having to touch the lappie, so things are going well so far
