nanopad idiot here

i'm a complete moron. for the life of me i cannot figure out how to get the nanopad to work AT ALL. all i'm interested in is creating drum beats. can someone be a champ and 1)help me out with installation instructions and 2)recommend software that is compatible that i can make beats with?

ok. I'm assuming you have no host (like SONAR, Ableton Live, Reaper, etc), cause if you did then you'd be able to figure it out.

Am also using Windows as an example.

1) Follow the intstructions to install the NanoPad (including downloding the editor and drivers for the Korg site).
2) Log onto Yellowtools.com and download their excellent sampler Independence Free from http://www.yellowtools.us/cp21/cms/index.php?id=842 (2 gigs)
3) Plug in the NanoPad and confirm the Scene1 light is lit
4) Once downloaded and installed, fire up Independence Free and in the "File" menu choose "Midi Prefenences". If you installed the NP corecctly you should see the NP listed in the top-left box.
5) Now load a drum kit by clicking on "01 click here to load instrument" - "Independence Free Instruments" - "Acoustic and Electronic Drum Kits" - "Acoustic Drum Kit One".
6) Start pounding the NanoPad and having fun

--note: later you can change the notes played on the pads by using the Korg Nano software editor.
--note: try loading different Independence Free instruments and playing them with the NanoPad.

how the heck do I choose the root folder for independence free? I too am a massive noob to the world of music software and controllers, but nothing I do seem to work..

the EZDrummer Lite program won't open anywhere, and I do have Reaper, so according to your post, I should figure this out by myself. well I don't, and two hours of downloading and troubleshooting with no end result is pretty frustrating. can't wait to experience it again tomorrow when I have to install stuff fro the two other nanocontrollers.

argh, I'm no good with computers, but I mean, 12 year olds can handle the nanopad...

allright I tried a few things on my own, and not suprisingly, nothing works and I don't understand anything.

first, in the manual for the nanopad, it says I need to create settings in the host application (Which I assume is Reaper?), but I've read the reaper manual for an hour now and can't find any useful info on how to connect the bloody thing to reaper. bear in mind that computer language is like ancient greek to me, it's just not a language I understand at all..

I've never been more tempted to smash my computer than I am right now...

I don't know Reaper specifically, but you'll be looking for some kind of "MIDI Settings" dialog. That kind of thing is often a part of a larger Preferences dialog.

Basically, installing the nanoPad drivers will allow your computer to see the nanoPad as a MIDI device, and Reaper will need to be listening for MIDI input from that device.

perfect timing, Reaper just decided to die on me. "Error creating dialogue" it says and it closes all windows. means I probably won't be able to fix this until I've fixed reaper first. damn it

ok sarcasm: here's what happens when I try to follow your way of doing this:

1. I connect the NanoPad via the cable. nothing happens. When I go to "my computer" the usb-ports don't show, and when I connect another usb device, they all show, but the one where the nanopad is connected says it's nothing there. Same story with the NanoKontrol.

2. downloaded the yellowtools thing, installed and running, but there's nothing in the midi-preferences box.

so nothing happens. I'm starting to think it may be the OS on my computer that causes this trouble. I'm running Vista Home Premium (that my laptop came with), and the manual says I need Vista SP1, could it really be that simple? Also, if this is the case, I'm rather shocked that the nano-series won't work with such a major OS as Vista Home, do they really expect everyone to run the same OS?

computer world overwhelms me..

ok I'm about to snap here.

Downloaded Vista SP1, and got the message that it can't be installed because it can only be installed in version of vista in certain languages, and Norwegian isn't one of them, and I can't find out where to download English Vista Home. please shoot me

SP1 is a service pack, not an OS. Go to windowsupdate.com and you should have the option to download SP1, as well as all kinds of updates. I'm not a Vista user myself, but I believe they released versions of SP1 for Vista Home and the other versions around the same time.

If you have managed to get the drivers for the nanoPad installed somehow, I'd uninstall them, disconnect your nanoPad from your computer, reboot, and then do the SP1 update (grab any other Windows updates you can, while you're at it). Then, start installing the driver software for the nanoPad. Make sure not to plug it in until the driver installer tells you to.

oh, I just assumed it was an OS, as it says in the manual: "Operating system: XP SP2 or later, or Vista SP1".. well well, finally found the right version (all languages supported), so I'll install it, re-boot and try from start. I'm crossing my fingers this will do the trick.

ok, the pad now transmits MIDI, but no audio on my speakers. get sound from Itunes player etc, so there's a setting I've missed, but just can't find. I downloaded ASIO4all (as it seemed I needed this ASIO thingy), read the manual, getting nowhere. any tips would be great.

Hi TrondC:

You've certainly been busy and it appears that you are making progress.

I don't have Reaper, so I'm going to use the standalone version of Indy Free to try and help you out. I don't use Vista either (XP) but the principles should be the same.

Firstly start up Indy Free stand-alone (in XP that's from the bottom-left of the Desktop START-ALL PROGRAMS-Yellow Tools Indy Free 2.0-Indy Free. Vista shoud be similar)

-Load up a drum kit as in my post above.
-Go to the "Mapping" tab (at the top just under the Indepedence FREE text)
-Using the mouse click on C1 on the keyboard. If everything is correct you'll see a small line flash as you click above the note and hear a bass drum.
-If you hear nothing then go to File (top left) - Audio Preferences and confirm that your Sound Card is listed in the Driver tab. If it is not then you may not have native ASIO drivers for your sound card and so will have to use ASIO4ALL v2. Choose that option and click on Settings.
-The ASIO4All settings screen will open and you should confirm that your sound card is listed on the left and that the note icon alongside it is green.
-If not try clicking on Enable (bottom right). If that still does not work then you'll need to check with the ASIO4ALL guys on their web-site as I rarely work ASIO and so have limited knowledge of it.

If audio does work when clicking on the keyboard, and the NANOPad is listed under the Midi Preferences tab in Indy Free then using a pad should work. Initially in default Scene 1, pad 7 should trigger C1 in Indy Free so press pad 7 and confirm that the small line flashes above the note.
If the small line flashes in a blank area of the screen then you'll need to change the note that the pad triggers by using the Korg Kontrol Editor (note that Korg's C1 is one octave higher Indy Free's C1. i.e. to trigger C3 in Indy Free you'll need to set enter C4 as the note triggered in the Editor).

hi, thanx for the detailed response, seems it's the ASIO4all v2 saying that my speakers/audio output possibly is in use by another application, and it suggests MS GS Wavetable Synth (no idea what that is, does not appear when I use the search feature on my computer)

other than that, I get a flash on the Mapping keyboard when I hit the nanopad, so this is clearly just a matter of making the audio come out. Oh, and I already have ASIO4all v2.9, so that should not be the issue.

however, I don't find any Enable function anywhere, so I guess I'll drop them an email to figure this out.

thanx a lot for all the help, I feel like alice in wonderland trying to figure all this out, I'm used to running a stereo cable from my synths to my mixer, then from the mixer to my speakers and that's it. this has been, to say the least, overwhelming..

when you setup your output in ASIO4all make sure you have nothing else open. I'll look at my setup when I get home and update you on what I did.
