Can Anyone point me to a video of sampling with the esx-1

Post by starving student »

i'm searching high and low and cannot find one video of someone sampling with this machine, I'd like to see some sampling and programming of motion sequences on the samples, does anybody have any leads?

I'm a samplist doing experimental hiphop and am trying to pick up an esx-1 this week end but i'm having a hard time finding examples of people just sampling through the Line ins, slicing thing up, putting efx on the slices, re-sequencing the slices, using motion sequences on the slices. I've been checking you tube maybe you guys know some better places?

there really isnt a whole lot on this stuff...

ive looked A LOT on youtube.. most of the tutorials and how tos are nothing more than basic basic stuff..

i got mine to do the same type thing it sounds like youre planning on doing..

i havent directly sampled into mine but i have chopped and loaded samples to my machine via the card slot and cardreader... this machine would suck without the esx sample program (you can download it from this board its one of the stickies)...

i own an sp 404 and like this machine a lot more for workflow in general..

the slice feature is rad.. you can slice it up and send the slice to a drum pad no problems.. i havent messed with resampling a drumbreak to a pad yet but im pretty sure you can do it.. there is a section in the manual dealing with resampling from the esx its self i just havent messed with it yet..

its dope i like it a lot.. there are just tons of people doing stuff that im not as into with this machine and in the right hands you could make some dope dope hip hop stuff.. mewte on youtube has a few hiphopish tracks but i havent found many other people doing stuff like i wanna make..

sampling is a breeze on the ESX...I sample at least 95% of the time from my turntable, with vinyl records being my only sound source. I do some tweaking of the EQ with my gemini mixer as well as with my microkorg before finally sampling into the ESX. When you sample into the ESX you can either be in pattern, song or sample mode. But to apply effects and make more precise modifications to the incoming sound its best to be in sample mode. Once you have your sample ( you can sample in either stereo or mono, and pan out the left and right channels of the incoming audio for certain sounds that may have been panned in the original mix that your sampling from)you can than normalize, adjust the play level i.e. odb or 12db's, and than truncate accordingly. Finally you can than name your sample assign it to a number and than add multiple effects to it if you desire and than resample.

on the ESX...you can have 24 knob tweaks recorded to each and every part/sample.
In addition to that you can also record even more motion sequence changes in song mode, in addition to the tweaks that you made in pattern mode.

Its way more than enough, really. You just gotta love the ESX.

i love how its supposed to be showing how to sample with the esx (on the greenlightatlanta) and he is like

i sample off my ipod
heres the orig. sample i used
(then the video cuts)
so yea its easy to chop them up just look in the manual or online..

awesome greenlight thanks for showing us how you made these beats but not really showing us anything at all..

thats what i was talking about with the electribe stuff on youtube..

I tried messing around with the sampling just a short while ago and I found it a bit limited.

It seems like its very geared towards one shot records and not loop recordings. For instance, I was synced to an incoming track but I couldn't get it to records a perfect 1 bar loop. I had to manually hit 'start rec' and 'end rec' and we all know how rubbish a human is at that sort of thing.

Can the esx-1 record loops properly?

Haha, that greenlightatlanta guy has a demo of the emx where he's like "i mean it's not just a flashy board with flashing lights and cool looking knobs" *voice trails off* "it's going to be around for a while". *looks away from the camera*

It's like dude I hope you don't work in music shop cuz you're about as convincing as George Bush.
