Can't get recording working.

I'm having trouble recording. I know the answer is going to be something really simple and stupid but I can't get it to work. I've been working with the manual.

Pre-Rec test:
I press audio thru and the levels are good and there's audio comming in.

1) I click Shift-Rec, then play. It says it its 'Sampling'.
2) Press STop. It says 'NewSmpl1'
3) I press Play and silence plays for the same length of time I just recorded.

Some things that may be effecting this are how much space I've got on the memory. Maybe its too full?

Can anybody see anything missing from my list? Does anyone have a 'Recording Debug checklist'
