Help needed with Radias sound editor

Post by Joe-maccer »

I am havig a problem getting patches from the sound editor to the Radias.
I had a pro install the new set of programs/patches and don't care too much for them. So, rather than pay more money to have him reinstall them, he made me a disc of all the original ones. Now I am trying to put them back and keep getting this error "Device inquiry error." The sound editor is totally new to me so if someone can help I would appritiate it.
I did read from the manual but it confusing. Thanks
Joe

In Radias Editor, go into Options ->Preferences and select:

MIDI IN: RADIAS - KBD/KNOB
MIDI OUT: RADIAS - SOUND

If you cant see the Radias options make sure you installed the Korg USB drivers correctly (and of course connected the unit via USB to your computer).

This sounds simple enough, but if your like me, you have a way different setup. How do you work around that?

My setup:

Midi controller --> Radias
Radias --> Interface (midi & audio)
Interface -->firewire -->computer

So in preferences, I have the choice of one of my midi ports, or korg port 1 or 2, or nothing else.

Since I dont understand why I have to set this up in the first place, or what this is going to do for me, I dont know which to choose. What about the usb? Why doesnt it communicate through that?

if you use the USB then the editor will respond much faster when it comes to writing data, because the USB-MIDI is actually faster than standard serial MIDI.
see the weak link in your current setup is the actual physical MIDI connection, which is the slowest part. kind of like a bottleneck. anyway, you don't need BOTH the USB and a MIDI > interface connection.

furthermore, if you install the Korg Drivers (and run the install utility it puts in the start menu for windows), the radias gives you its in and out ports seperately, so you can address the Radias, and any external gear seperately, making it a USB/MIDI interface in its own right.

anyway, having the USB connection makes the MIDI connection to your interface redundant.
you want to select Radias KBD/KNOB and Radias SOUND as the editor ports.
of you have local off then you would also want to choose Radias MIDI In as the 'note input' for the editor.

Yes I understand that the USB/MIDI is faster, and while editing any sound or reinstalling the OS I would definetly do it using USB. But what I was previousely getting at is the simple fact that I dont have a good understanding of what the setup is for and how it works with the Radias. Setting up MIDI In and Out to me sounds more like setting up where the MIDI notes are going to come from and go to, not for sending and receiving data. Because of this misunderstanding, I havnt been able to do anything.

My different setup, using actual MIDI cables/ports is setup that way for the simple fact that I dont want to take up another USB port, as well as the fact that I work with different programs, and its easier to tell the programs to look for MIDI Port One than look for a USB MIDI, which is not part of my interface.

I cant tell you how many people's setups get screwy because of that.

So anyways, Im still in the dark about this, and in the mean time my Radias is useless....so, anyone want to give me a hald, please take a look at my post:

Which is more important, avoiding the use of USB or not being able to use your Radias with the editor software? Pick one.

Oh sorry, I did mention it in detail on another post, but I guess Im getting them all jumbled up!

Well, I was using the 'ol Radias one day, just going through the sounds and playing them to find something close to what I was looking for, when all of the sudden between playing two noted the sound stopped coming, and all I got was a random drum hit. It appeared that the programmed sounds had vannished, and in their places were just the general drum patch.

So I did some research, and figured out what the 'restore to factory' button combo was, and it didnt do anything. So I looked into using the updater and software editor, and got it to load the 2.0 OS, and the sounds are all there, but the drums are too. Cant get rid of them, dont know how.

Hope that helps!
