have you seen the new Star Trek?

As the title suggests, anything goes in this section.

have you seen the new Star Trek?

Post by sewa »

If not then don't bother. I have just came back from the cinema and I can easily say that it has been by far the worst Star Trek I have ever seen; and I've seen all the episodes of "the Next Generation" (which I love) and most of "Voyager" ( which I also like even if it wasn't as good "the next gen"). Then there was the great "first contact" and quite good "Nemesis".

this, on the other hand, is below any standards. Idiotic plot (a star fleet cadet becoming a captain within five minutes after an alien attack), stupid dialogs and completely none of that ambiance that I love the Trek series for.. Just pure action and even that on pretty miserable level.

so if you're planning to go out to the cinema, make sure to pick up something else.

cheers

I feel the exact opposite about the flick. I never really liked the past Trek movies, maybe because I never got into the show much. I did watch some re-runs of the original series back in the late 70s and early 80s with my dad but that's the extent of my viewing. Never got into the Next Gen version with what's that bald guys name? Time to google...

Patrick Stewart yeah that's it.

So anyways, I rather enjoyed this latest movie, it was a thrill ride and I caught myself laughing quite a bit when the comments from the original series were re-enacted. Unfortunately I felt out of place due to the Trekkies that were in attendance. I was definitely in the minority @ Cinemark, I just went to see a fresh version of a popular series while 90% of the viewers seemed hardcore fans and even they liked it from their cheers and laughter.

Question for you sewa...

Did you see Transformers? If so did you enjoy it? Star Trek came across as the same type of film and I guess that's why I liked it(I loved Transformers).

This summer is going to be a blockbuster one for me. I rarely go to the theater to see a movie(I only go to the early bird for $5.00, I refuse to pay almost 9.00 to see a movie) but I've already seen Xmen:Wolverine(which was faaaar better than any of the past Xmen attempts in my opinion), Star Trek and coming soon is Terminator, Transformers 2(looks incredible), G.I. Joe(yooo Joe!), and Harry Potter(yeah I like the series, there I said it).

To end this rant....

Big thumbs up from me on Star Trek 8)

No, I haven't seen transformers, but I like the Xman series.

Question to you now: did you see Star Trek "First Contact"?

I have to agree with Sewa.
The newer generation of fans may enjoy it,
but if you're like me and grew up with Shatner,
Stewart and Mulgrew, you will probably not like
this movie. It wasn't one.....I cared to sit through,
a second time!

Hmm good question, if I did I don't recall if I liked it or not and that means if I did see it, it was one I'd rather not remember seeing  That was in the mid 90's correct?

Time to Google again....

Yes I saw it and I didn't care for the cast, same cast from the Next Generation series correct? Again, I never got into Star Trek much so I could go either way on any of the tv shows and/or movies. I saw the originals enough to recall the sayings such as "damnit Jim I'm not a physicist" and "I'm giving it all she's got" and all of the other ones said in this new movie that's currently out. I didn't go into it expecting much, that's how I approach all movies so if it turns out to be entertaining it's a plus, and if it's a dud.....I don't get upset.

I still like watching Shatner act(Boston Legal), the guy makes me laugh plain and simple.

I highly recommend seeing Transformers, especially seeing as the sequel is out in a month :D

I think I can see where you're comming from.

I should be adding this to my little review then: if you're like me, if you have been a Star Trek fan for a long time and appreciate the performance of Patrick Stewart or Kate Mulgrew then spare yourself the latest movie. You will be disappointed.

Well, I have to say I liked it. I find taking Star Trek too seriously is somewhat a mistake, and I think the more excitement and action and fun factor they can add the better. First Contact is my fav of all. And Seven of Nine is my all time fav character. But this movie was a fun romp and I hope there's a bunch of sequels, because for the first time there is no Star Trek tv show that's not reruns and there haven't been any movies for a while. I actually didn't really like Nemesis the movies after Contact very much, they seemed to small somehow. By the way I didn't love the new X-files at all. That one was no better than an average episode from the tv series.

I like action too as long as the plot is more or less reasonable ('ve seen Transformers and liked it).

I don't buy the new S.T. though, no matter how good the fx were.

Loved the new movie. Original series fan, here. I have them all on DVD, plus a season of NEXT GENERATION.

"Number One, I order you to take a number two. Make it so!"

I can appreciate a lot of NEXT GENERATION episodes, but not how sterile those people are. By that, I mean that they have given up money, material wants............and some of the adventurous elements of their humanity. Sure, you can use the replicator to fabricate a guitar and you can lose yourself on the holodeck, but I feel like telling these people that they should really play outside, sometime. Instead, they go and get lectured by Whoopie Goldberg in the ship's pub!

The new movie harks back to the daring adventure, the womanizing, need for speed, fist fights, monsters, character pride and conflict, etc. It's funny that STAR TREK NEMESIS has been mentioned, because it shares the same type of bad guy - a bald Romulan, piloting a ship with tentacles. I thought NEMESIS (like INSURRECTION) was a boring movie.

What made the new movie so enjoyable, for me, was Kirk's wreckless genius versus Spock's order, logic and Vulcan pride. Kirk gets Spock's goat several times and it is a hoot to watch. Throw in Karl Urban's wonderful homage to Bones and the threesome's chemistry seems to be clicking again.

While some think that the alternate timeline and destruction of Vulcan was disrespectful writing, I was never interested in the stories of ambassador missions to and from that planet. Spock is now an endangered species, which makes him all the more special.

I was having gleeful flashbacks. Right after the movie, I subjected my kids to some of the classic monster episodes, like ARENA, DEVIL IN THE DARK and THE GALILEO SEVEN. :)

Glad you liked it Mike, now I don't feel so alienated

I finally convinced my Dad to go see it. He is by no means a Trekkie but still enjoyed the original series. In the end I think he enjoyed this new movie more than I did, a pleasant surprise because he usually doesn't give these newer movies a fair shake. He thanked me time and time again for talking him into seeing it.

I actually really enjoyed the new star trek movie.. much more than i thought i would.

I grew up on the original series, it was total cheeze but it had its charm.
Never did think too much of TNG.. too preachy. There were some great episodes tho.
I did like DS9.. it was darker, different and more like a serial but it was written in a way that you didnt have to watch the whole series in order.
I absolutely hated voyager.. It was pretty much gilligan's island in space with way too much techno babble and no plot.
and enterprise? horrible horrible horrible.. (also, what was with that crappy theme song?)

And as far as the films go, they had ONE good film and that was Wrath of Khan.

But the new star trek movie had all the basics, and a few new twists... But most of all.. IT WAS FUN!

I mean we got to see kirk seduce green women AND we get to see a red-shirt killed.. AND we get to finally learn Uhura's first name.
My only real complaint about the new movie was that almost EVERY scene was filmed with gratuitous lens flares. Kinda got annoying after a while.

Also, with the changes they made to the timeline i strongly suspect that this kirk and spock might be sporting a goatee in one of the next films... (mirror, mirror anybody?)

Now its me who feels alienated...

If I were to draw a parallel, the older Treks (not 'Enterprise' though) are like Jean Michel Jarre's music to me - it sounds analog and a bit lo-fi at times but the composition is perfect. That recent movie on the other hand is like a techno piece; a nice, polished digital mix with tons of reverb on it but musically its just not my cup of tea.

I don't mind action and effects but I do not buy the plot and the main character (actually I hated their take on J.T. Kirk); way to many cliches there imho.

I keep seeing this thread popping up and reading 'Kirk' and all I can think about is Denny Crane :-) Boston Legal is a really great show, and it's funny seeing two guys from Star Trek and Stargate in a totally context.

Sorry for the off topic ...
