Hi there, this is my first post here so please be gentle! I've had the micro x a few months now and have only just started exploring the multi mode, controlling the micro x with ableton live. This is a great feature and works brilliantly sending midi over USB, opening up a whole range of possibilities.
I see from the manual that "you can play an external sound module on the midi channel of the control track"
Does this mean I can hook up an external sound module (something like a DSI mopho) to my soundcard and micro x using midi cables and use it on one of the 16 tracks in multi mode, enabling it also to be triggered by the software sequencer? If so, I am a bit confused as to what plugs into where and what settings to make on the x. Not even sure if the micro x can send/receive midi data over usb AND through midi cables at the same time or does it have to be one or the other?!?
Hope this makes some sort of sense! Thanks.
external sound module / midi / multi

The problem is that you don't have Midi Thru on the MicroX so I cant really see you being able to loop another synth thru the MicroX. You need this if you want to control another synth through the MicroX. (Mopho on Midi channel 2 and the Micro on say Midi channel 1). If you take the outs of the MicroX to the Mopho you will simply trigger the Mopho in unison.Does this mean I can hook up an external sound module (something like a DSI mopho) to my soundcard and micro x using midi cables and use it on one of the 16 tracks in multi mode
This does have its advantages though and being able to control the DSI Mopho with the MicroX arpeggio comes to mind.
I cant see what the point would be ??? they both do the exact same thing. You will just be wasting resources imo unless ofcourse you want to trigger the Mopho in unison. Not even sure if the micro x can send/receive midi data over usb AND through midi cables at the same time or does it have to be one or the other?!?

I don't think its nearly as limited as FLi suggests, however, the MicroX's small keyboard isn't very useful for this kind of thing. its more useful on the rest of the tritons like the X50, TR, Extreme...
in combis, you could have keysplits where the external synth is triggered by the other keyzone.... and yes if you were using an internal sequencer (replaced by multi-mode in the X50 and mX), you could trigger internal synths.
I have a TR, and I know for a fact that you can't use the USB and the external MIDI at the same time, so you're probably right that with the mX too you couldn't use it to use the external synth in your sequences. instead, i'd recommend you invest in a cheap USB-MIDI interface like the Midisport and E-MU 1x1 and use that to interface with your other synth from your computer.

Thanks for your answers. I suppose what I'm aiming for is a set up where i dont have to plug and unplug different synths to record them into my sequencer, or control them from my sequencer. Maybe i misunderstand the manual..... ?
I have midi ins and outs on my soundcard. Will have a go connecting the micro x with them. Only ever used midi over USB before and it just works with minimum fuss! Hopefully this will be the same, and if it does work then at least i know i can go for the mopho and "drive" it using my software, even if i have to plug and unplug all the time.
Thanks.

Actually you're right, my bad !!!I don't think its nearly as limited as FLi suggests,

So you take a midi lead from the MicroX's out into the Mopho's in and it'll work...

aaah, thanks for that. I may well now go for the mopho, now that my understanding of the possible hook up to the micro x as part of a multi set has been confirmed. The korg has some great sounds which i'm still exploring, but the temptation of hooking up a real analogue synth for under 300 quid is too much!
Had been toying with the idea of ditching the hardware altogether (i AM a hardware novice) and keeping things simple and under one roof, with the likes of Reason. But ultimately, I think I'll find it more rewarding to put in a bit of effort with the "noise boxes"and possibly get better sounds into the bargain.
