New iPhone 3G S

Post by Sharp »

Hi Guys.

Did you see Apples news on the new iPhone 3GS ? http://www.apple.com/
I have to say I've mixed feelings about this. It's not much of an upgrade even over the first gen model.

Sharp, any further thoughts on this?

I've been checking them out, and I kinda ruled out the 1st Gen model presuming...

But the net functionality on the iPhone 3GS seems fantastic - at least in-store...

Very pricey still though....

Yeah, I was entitled to an upgrade from the 1st gen to the 3rd gen for only 100 euro so I decided to go for it. What I get for that which I hadn't got with the first gen is....

3G
Faster Graphics
Compass
GPS
Video Recorder
MMS

After that everything else is the exact same so that's a little hard to get used to. Seems in the Apple work the theme is incremental upgrades.

So far it's not been much of a great experience because the previous two firmwares from Apple are well known online for been very flaky and plagued with problems. The current OS is much better but it broke compatibility with many applications and the signal strength and battery are still all over the place.

Apple are also taking the piss big time with the restrictions they place on the end user. For example you can't download anything larger than 10MB off the mobile network ( you musty use WiFi) , Youtube is not full quality, you can't email a video clip recorded on the phone which is longer than 1 minute long, using your phone as a modem is disabled in many counties, Ireland included... the list goes on and on. It's full of restrictions that Apple apply on the end user.

In many ways the iPhone is amazing, but in other ways it's like something out of the 90's because of the deals they have made with the Networks. It's by no means the best phone I've had.

Don't think I'd buy into the next model either that comes out after this one. If I go Windows 7 mobile I get a phone that I can do whatever I want with with, but if you buy an Apple phone it comes with quite a long list of restrictions.

Big Brother watching huh ….!!!!

well... thats put me right off.

I got a 'wee' netbook recently and was bemoaning it a little because of the lack of wifi points on the move, thinking if I'd got the iPhone - I would have got better internet coverage wherever..

I still think the iPhone is amazingly smooth for general browsing eg if you want to book something over the internet or check for gigs in town or the like.

I might though go for a mobile broadband package for the netbook instead now.

Thanks for the info on that.

Well I have one and I think it is great.
A few small issues.

2mega pixel camera no zoom. Not great but ok. (additional..new app that allows zoom..!)

WiFi needed for some applications but the auto detect free wifi is great. I have wifi at home and work, the two places I mainly use it so no biggy.. 3G internet works at other times.

Google maps still needs a bit of work .. id like an app that allows me to create points on the map I have been to as the web site does so I can have info and pictures from say my honeymoon..

Not a big fan of itunes and dont like the fact that there is no drag and drop to the memory, everything has to go through itunes.

Other than that it's the best phone I have ever had in so many ways..

:D

(Additional... inbuilt folder for storing photos taken by the phone no longer appears on my Windows PC when I connect the cable. Photo folders can be added by itunes..yes you add photos by itunes..!! but strangely it doesn't let you see photos taken on the phone in itunes.!)

They have some bizzare operating restrictions on this thing.

App store is good. Easy to download and it automatically tells you there is an update available for each app you have.
