How can i get the sound im looking for??

Post by bezmond »

Hi all. I am wanting to do a cover song in my band of a calvin harris song (theres a link at the bottom) and i just cant get the same sound on the R3 as his band use in the song. Ive been tweaking knobs and playing around but to no avail. I can play the tune i just cant get the sound!! Also if anybody knows how hes recorded his voice and used it as the sample in this song (in the bridge part) that would be great! I think he uses an AKAI or something similar, maybe a Roland SP-555.

That looks like a Novation Xio Synth. It looks like he's just using the digital delay effect. The Xio and X-Station have good effects that can be used on external inputs.

As far as the synth chords, look up the Jump patch on google.

Thanks!

Yeah it does have that sound of Jump. I was thinking about getting a NORD Stage. do you think that would be a better choice than say a Novation x Station? I know they cost a hell of a lot more and have a good reputation.

Nord makes good gear, but I've never bought them because I think their prices are too high for what I get. I like the X-Station because it sounds great and it represents one of the best values for all the features it has. The X-Station has a great keybed with aftertouch, full editing on the panel with a ton of knobs, 2 channel USB audio interface with 6 FX/ch and full-featured midi controller with configuration memory. The X-Station has a long linage from the BassStation, Nova, and Supernova series. The Xio is a feature cut version of the X-Station without the knobs, no aftertouch, and the keybed isn't as good. I got the X-Station 25 from GuitarCenter for $375, new on sale.

The R3 is a great value too, with a better synth engine than the X-Station, but the X-Station is more versatile with its other features. That's why I have them both. The Nord Lead has a nice keybed but the synth engine is about 10 years old and is showing its age, with no FX. The Nord Stage is much more capable, but for $3,000 is too expensive for me. I got my Triton Extreme and Fantom X together for less than that.
