Should I sell my X50 for a TR?

Post by The Magic Hoof »

As the title says. Getting a TR would have more benefits over the X50, with the same sound. What do you think? What does the TR have that the X50 doesn't?

One thing that I'll miss through is the pitch and mod wheels. Don't like sticks too much :(

it just has the sequencer instead of Multi mode. and the sampling expansion option or option to install sampling ram (to load new samples from SD card).

not sure if the X50 has the additional 2 output ports?

besides that, it is exactly the same. and as you say, sticks aren't for everyone, although the stick goes back as well as forwards, true to the other tritons, so you get a different modulation or change in the sound with Joystick -Y, which by default is CC02 breath controller. TR also has aftertouch, which adds a completely different dimension of modulation.

IMHO, a better upgrade path would be to the M50. the M50 is more between the X50 and TR in features, but has the new sounds. so there won't be any features that you miss, but you will get the sequencer. M50 also has an additional drum track alongside the two arpeggiators, which are the same as on the tritons and the TR/X50/MicroX.
but the M50 does loose the additional two outputs that are on the TR, and no sampling, or aftertouch.
the main thing that sells the M50 though is its five insert effects, rather than the TR's one insert effect. it makes sequencing in sequencer mode much easier because you can still add effects to tracks, without running out so quickly. on the TR for example you couldn't have a piano with amp sim and a guitar with phaser at the same time, whilst also having master reverb and chorus sends.

I'm getting an M3 so I've got those sounds covered.

Basically I just wanted to have the old patches that I love on my X50. I could just shut up and keep it, but I was thinking using those same patches in an environment with a sequencer would be a lot better. The Triton/X50/etc has some patches that I just can't live without and they aren't included on the M50 or M3.

Recreate them on the M3; they'll be close (though obviously not exact).

Or, have the M3's sequencer trigger the X50; there's no reason why you can't have some tracks in a sequence sending MIDI data externally.

You know, I probably should just trigger them like you say. My logic here though has been, 'if I'm going to have those sounds I might as well get the best board/sequencer to go along with it'. The X50 is just fine but I thought if I ever had extra cash that I'd get the best board in that era's range which would have the same patches.

the M3 has an excellent sequencer, and you could use that to trigger programs or combis from your X50. running two sequencers could get a bit confusing I think.

Yeah, I meant more like using a single sequencer at a time. You know, maybe have a board with a sequencer to take with me on trips and leave the M3 at home. I think I'll probably just wait it out for now and see how keeping the X50 works out!

My opinion: the X5O SUCKS ON ICE! I had an X5D for years and loved it (till it got stolen at a gig in NYC) but the X5O....I dunno, it just feels cheap and $hitty to me. The keys feel like crap, sound was mediocre at best and the bars on the sides, come on.

Get a TR, you'll be ever-so-glad you did!
