question for everyone

Post by zharrison20 »

I noticed that on the new microkorg xl, there is a piano sound. And i also heard that the microkorg xl runs off of the r3 sound engine, so i was wondering why cant we get that sound on the r3?

The MKXL and R3 are hybrid virtual analog synths in that they simulate analog synthesis but they also have a ROM containing 64 sampled waveforms that can be used by OSC1. Most of the ROM on the MKXL and R3 is identical, however that acoustic piano is one of the differences. The ROM cannot be changed. Thus the R3 will never get that acoustic piano wave. But this is no real loss if you recognize that the piano wave on the MKXL is quite inferior to most ROMplers, and it's not even in the same league as the velocity switched stereo piano on the X50, for example.

Then there's the issue of why anyone would really _want_ a piano sample on a virtual analog synth, since they are completely different kinds of sounds. It's a bit like trying to train your cat to roll-over, fetch, bark, and wag its tail. It might be impressive to get a cat to behave like a dog, but if you really want a dog, no cat acting like a dog is a good substitute. They are different animals.
