RPPR key doesn't transmit midi

Post by SamAndrew »

Has anyone else had a problem with a RPPR key not transmitting a midi note? Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:

I play in a band with a live drummer. He uses a Roland SPD-S with loops on it. For the drum machine, I programed a loop at 117 BPM and I have a RPPR pattern (on my Korg) at 117 BPM to go with it. I want to hook up my Korg TR to the Roland drum machine, hit the RPPR key (which is D#2) and have my Korg pattern and his Roland loop start simultaneously and in sync.

The Korg TR will transmit a midi note when the RPPR is not assigned to the key but the second I assign it, it no longer sends the data! This is so frustrating! I can't seem to find any mention of this in the manual. Any and all help appreciated! THANKS!!!

Here's the info I got (via email) from Korg Tech support:

"...I stand corrected. It works differently than we both thought.
I thought that you wouldn't be able to trigger the single note, and you
thought that while the RPPR pattern was playing, it should send out a
single note to the midi Out and trigger the connected keyboard with that
note. What I found was that the single RPPR note on the TR that triggers
the pattern also sends out to the Midi Out, but plays all the notes that
were recorded! So while pressing the single note, the keyboard I had
connected to the midi Out of the TR played the whole pattern through
midi."

So, bearing this new information in mind, I am going to try and set the midi not of my drum machine patch to be triggered by the first note of the RPPR INSTEAD of the actual note on the keyboard I am playing to trigger the RPPR (I might just set them as the same note). I will let you guys know if this works.

...is no one else interested in this, or were you guys just stumped like I was? I'm getting no feedback here, what's up? :?

I don't use MIDI sync devices in my band, everything is played live or sampled, so I didn't have to do it with the TR.

I hope it works now, tell us what happened when u finish.

Yes, this worked. So in review....

If you want to trigger an external midi device (in my case, that is running a loop in sync with your TR) the midi note hit must be the first note of the RPPR (i.e. can't trigger a middle C arpeggio with the bottom C on the keyboard and expect external midi device to respond, UNLESS you have the ext. midi device set up to be triggered by middle C and NOT the lowest C).

...clear as mud? Cool.
