Pink Floyd patches for R3

Post by downtownpaulyp »

Hiya,

Just created these two for fun.
***UPDATE: Corrected the mod sequence and note after watching The Making of Dark Side Of The Moon and seeing David Gilmour key the notes into the sequencer.

On_The_Run.r3p
One_Of_These_Days.r3p

On The Run, from Dark Side Of The Moon:
Hit the second lowest "Eb" on the keyboard and stomp on a sustain pedal to hold the sequence. Since the arpeggiator isn't programmable, I decided to create it using a Mod Sequence.

Timbre 1 is the 8-note sequence, front panel knobs will let you play with the filter cutoff and resonance, lfo depth on the filter as a triplet (like the original), and dry/wet balance of the master reverb FX.

Timbre 2 uses the arpeggiator to simulate the high-hat white noise sound. Its controls are for delay wet/dry, decay time, filter cutoff, and oscillator level.

This patch is great for hours of knob-twiddling fun!

One Of These Days, from Meddle:
Hit any key to open the audio gate, then speak into the built-in mic or feed one into the Audio 1 jack.

Vocals are run through a ring modulator, then pitch shifted as insert effects, with the ring mod frequency set at 15Hz for the growl of the original.

Knobs will let you adjust dry/wet mix for each, pitch shift, and ring mod oscillator frequency.

The original put vocals through the ring mod, then slowed them down on tape to lower the pitch. Ring modulators are also how the Daleks on Dr. Who get their distinctive sound.

Enjoy!

Download the latest--I corrected On The Run after watching a DVD of David Gilmour demonstrating the sequence on a VCS3.

Whilst he keyed it in beginning on a C, I noticed it's actually in E-flat; he must have it transposed up 3 semitones.

The note sequence keyed in on DVD is:

C - C an octave lower - Eb - G - F - Eb - F - Bb

Transposed properly, the notes are all on black keys:

Eb - Eb an octave lower - Gb - Bb - Ab - Gb - Ab - Db

So hit any key you want and hold it, but Eb would be the correct one, historically speaking.

don't know why but i automatically assumed that "you had watched making of the dark side of the moon documentary" and created the patch afterwards :)

and yes: something is wrong with the link at the moment

Links are fixed.

I replaced the files instead of updating them on the hosting service, so a new URL was generated.

And I actually did most of the patch before watching the DVD, I was simply inspired to review it and get the details correct!

ok this might sound funny but the first patch you designed sounded closer to the original

is there any way the hihat could be improved? (more pronounced so it sounds like a hihat instead of a small shaker)

thank you. again

Hi!

I also created one (it is my first patch):
fincygo_darkside_ontherun.r3p

As I see it is the most popular Pink Floyd theme

Timbre1 is a solo. Just push down the first E key to start.
ModWheel - Noise
PitchBend - Panorama
Timbre 2 is the Hi-Hat
Knob4 - Volume

Try it, bye!

downtownpaulyp,

could you post the initial patch? i took your second patch for granted thus overwrote the first one but this second patch doesn't sound/feel right. it might be different form what gilmour does on the video but i prefer the one you yourself did by ear ;)

Sorry, the first version is gone!

From the video, the hi-hat sound is definitely white noise from the VCS3.

If you want to vary the hi-hat pattern, go to timbre 2, then page 32.
There you can edit the hits by turning them on and off thru the arpeggiator.

As for adjusting the hi-hat sound, play with the cutoff frequency and delay time to get it how you want.

Good luck!

funny but your first version was the best so far. this second (original!) just doesn't feel right. i'm no patch programmer so i'll stick with your latest offering.

thank you again
