Mixing for PA

Post by orbit »

Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on getting the best sound from a club or venue PA system.

What will give me screaming highs, thick sub-bass and midrage clarity?
Should I mix in mono?

I produce and perform dance music and want my live set to have as much energy as possible.
Drum and Bass, Downtempo, ElectroPop, Industrial, Dubstep
RM1x / EMX-1 / Korg Triton Rack / Korg Prophecy

I am trying to work out levels for clubs too, so far the only thing i've come up with that makes tracks more club friendly/less speaker killing is to compress 4:1 >20dB the entire track. Guessing you already do compression of some kind but thought i'd mention it anyway.

This style of mixing is going to sound weird but layer a parametrically filtered drum (filtered drums just keeping high end) over the normal drum track and this beefs the high end and mid range just enough that you can whack massive bass under it if required. Seems to give a better and fuller high end sound by doubling up. It is caveman style mixing but works well for me.
