i3 / pc

Post by 1stripey »

Hi

Don't know if this is a dopey question, but if it is please bear with me.

When trying to load a file from my Korg i3 to my PC, I get a message "you need to format this disc first, which kinda defeats the object. Also a similar thing when trying it the opposite way (i.e from PC to i3)

My knowledge of these operations is very minimal, I'm just a simple musician but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all, stripey.

Hi Stripey

I assume you are using a standard floppy diskette - I think your diskette may need formatting. Even though they are often specified as "pre-formatted" it still might be worth formatting first. Remember not to format a diskette which has files you wish to keep - formatting will wipe the entire diskette clean.

Test on a blank diskette first and then try to save some files on it on the i3.

(If you format it on the PC then select FULL format as opposed to "quick".)

Hope this helps

i3 / pc

Post by 1stripey »

Hi Pete

Thanks for your quick reply.

I seem to be going round in circles. I just did a full format of a floppy on the PC which was OK. Then when I put this disk into the i3, it whirred for a while before saying "cannot read disk", with the same result when I tried to save a file from the i3 onto the disk.

So I format the same disk on the i3 and put it into the PC, then the PC straightaway tells me "You need to format this disk before you can use it".

Not knowing any better it seems the O/S's on the i3 and the PC are incompatible, but it's so frustrating 'cos I have a load of files on the PC, and via the PC on CD, which I would like to put into the i3.

Perhaps you can shed some light on this for me, and I appreciate your patience.

Thanks & Regards,

ken. (stripey) :)

Hi Ken

This is sounding like either the PC diskette drive or the i3 diskette drive is faulty or even just has dirty heads.
We need to figure out which. If a diskette drive's read-write heads are "out-of-true" it will format OK and continue to read and write diskettes OK provided the diskettes are only used on that drive.

Suggestion:-
If you have a friend with a PC/laptop which has a diskette drive then do the following (you need 2 new diskeetes - I will call them D1 and D2)
Format D1 on the i3
Format D2 on the PC
Try them both on your friend's PC and see if both open up ok in a window
Try writing some files to them.

This step may at least determine if one of your diskette drives is faulty.

It is also worth cleaning both drives - you should be able to get a diskette drive cleaning kit still.

Hope this helps

Let me know how it goes...

i3 / pc

Hey Pete

Thanks for the advice. I'll try all that and see what we get. Will let you know asap.

Under normal operating conditions, should the i3 accept a diskette formatted on a PC, and vice versa??

Thanks for your continuing help Pete. I've had this problem for some time and posted similar questions on other forums, but nobody ever bothered to answer me, so I am grateful for you taking the time.

Regards, ken. :)

Hi Strippy

I had the same problem with my i30

I believed it was a faulty floppy disk drive so I bought a standard
floppy drive and got an engineer to fit it. He did not fit the standard floppy drive which I bought as he said they very often do not work. He ordered one from somewhere (Korg supplier I believe) and fitted it and it works ok.

Best wishes

Floppy disks for i3's

Post by singerbill »

This is a late post on an old question that seems to re - occur frequently for i3 users. Floppy disks must be 720kb - not 1.44 mb to be compatable with i3 floppy drives. I've tried to use 1.44mb floppys by covering the "extra" hole on the right bottom of a 1.44 and it hasn't worked for me ever. So if you're having a problem downloading styles or other data from you're pc to i3 or i2 use a 720kb floppy and it will work.[/b]
