Ableton + Electribe - session view mapping Template

Post by harvestein »

Hey,
After talking with Gil Videla I have took the time to strip out all the stuff from one of my ableton sets and leave the mappings in.
There are 4 audio racks, and a few effects on each one. All mapped to Electribe controls (effects are mapped to synth type dial) clips 1 - 16 can be activated on each rack using step keys.

Full control instructions are in a READ ME file within the Ableton project folder
The folder is zipped and is here (sorry about the typo in file name) :
http://rapidshare.com/files/355068058/E ... roject.zip
Created using Ableton 8.0.4

I left some REX clips in each rack for you to mess around with (work best around 110-125 BPM) - just delete them if using your own songs or clips.
I tend to use drums in one and two, bass and melodies in 3 and 4

Its still pretty basic, so if anyone wants to improve on it (which i will keep doing anyway), or suggest anything then let me know. I if i have forgotten to do something that is causing the set not to work then let me know as well please.

Id also like to try some of your mapping templates if you have any!!

If someone knows a better site for hosting files then tell me as well, Rapidshare seems a bit of a pain in the ass.

If you join electribe-forums, I allow file attachments on there.

Also I built a utility for using the electribe as a midi controller you can search for the multiple postings about it on there.

Yeah, nice site, i might join up.
Are you talking about the utility you have on there for learning part mutes?
Thats a pretty nice app. I havent tried using midi yoke much yet though, but i was plannin gon using it so i can map the drum part settings, which dont seem to work without being converted to cc. Being able to map part mutes now is an extra boost.

I was sure i tried muting parts while monitoring in MIDI OX and didnt see any messages being sent......

come to think of it, this may be a good stepping stone for me, but I'll have to tweek it, cuz I'm trying to keep my ESX, not use the EMX, I see you're mapped for EMX. I will use EMX to get a feel for it, and eventually customize it for ESX

Remember, I do have a Luanchpad, so firing clips and some other things I can already do, but... you never know

So I tried out your template. Altough with the ESX
good control over most basic things in Ableton, certainly opened up some ideas. Only thing is seems like you can't play your EMX (or ESX) with the template, youve made it into a midi controller (which is fine)

Do you somehow PLAY the emx along side using this template?
I have a launchpad/nocturn combo and can do most of this already (and much more).

Let me know how you incorporate the EMX as an instrument into this set up

i normally use synth part 5 for electribe sounds, you can set up a midi rack in ableton so that it records any inputs you make on channel 5 into clips. I forgot to put that in the template though. although yeah i am more or less just using it as a controller on that one. i was just using it as a quick way of controlling backbeat loops while i was practicing scratching, saved me messing around with the computer. But i have used the electribe as an instrument in that set up as well.

More recently i have been using just Reason and the electribe playing together. Mapping the drum parts into ReDrum, and using the EMX's synths. Although im having some trouble making them cross compatible (like 6A/B does hats, 1 and 2 being kick snare etc). The drum parts dont control Redrum in the order you would expect. Like drum part 2 actually controls redrums 3rd instrument, not the second as i would like. I think its the way i have my midi set up in reason though, im going to take another look tonight.

Have you used redrum with your ESX? I know i could use abletons drum rack, but i prefer reason for making music, and ableton for mixing it or jamming.

How are you using your tribe? I see you allready have a number of controllers, which i dont, thats why i have been trying to use the tribe as part instrument part controller.

Just found the "DRNote" function on the midi utility on the EMX. Lets you change what note the tribe outputs on channel 10 for each drum part. Problem solved.

My drum patterns are better than i thought now i have some fresh sounds in them. Mixing them with the tribes synth sounds is going well too, this is definitely going to inject some interest back into it for me.

Only gripe so far is that i have to keep turning all the drum parts down on the electribe so they dont play as well as the midi triggered ones in reason.
