midi channel

Post by thuggy186 »

Hi,

I'm kind of a beginner of synthisizers.
I got radias like few months ago n have some question to ask.

(of course I read manuals, but i still can't understand..that's y i came here)

I saw radias has 16 midi channels.
does this mean i can use those 16 channels like m3, or motif with DAW programs like protools or logic?

which means...
when i make music I use protools with midi.
i use m3 with it's sequence mode. therefore i use 16 instruments at the same time.
and i have radias module, so i want to use radias like m3 with 16 channels but i don't think it's possible. am i right?

i know it's kind of stupid question but i hope somebody can solve my question for me.

thank u very much!

Hi thuggy,

you are right. The radias has 4 Timbres which can be played simultaneously, this means it is 4x multitimbral. Other KBs like the M3 and much others are 16x multitimbral. This are mostly music workstations, because they offer complete sets of instruments of each type for every music and their sound is mainly based on samples. The Radias is a virtual analog synthesizer, with its strength aimed to sound design in which the Radias offers a lot of possibilities. Of course you can assign the 4 timbres to the MIDI channel you want.

so..I can use 4 sounds at a same time with protools(midi)..that's what u mean right?

if so,..
can u tell me how to do that..?
sorry, i know i'm asking alot but..i can't figure it out.

maybe i'm not understanding the concepts of synthesizers

thank u very much!!

you would be able to sequence and record 4 sounds at the same time, but not as separate tracks. they'd all be going through the same sound cable, unless you can split the timbres over the two output pairs. Still, you wouldn't have 4 separate timbre outputs.

I'm not sure if the Radias could do this, but if you really wanted to get 4 separate tracks for each timbre, you could assign the timbres to each individual output. for example, one timbre comes out left one, one out right one, one out left two, one out right two. This is assuming that the Radias can use each output number separately. Of course, if this method is possible, all the timbres would be recorded mono.

If you use the Radias Sound Editor, doubleclick a patch, and for each Timbre there is a box (above the ArpAssign) for setting the Channel (mostly set to Global=All Channels). There you can set the MIDI channel to which that timbre has to respond.
On the Radias, when you selected a patch press Edit, then press Page+/- until you get the page "P03 Timbre" and the "MIDI" tab. There you can select a channel for each active timbre. In either case, I would recommend you to install and use the Editor!

tpantano is right, you will get the four timbres in a stereo track. But I think you allready know this

On edit page 03(TIMBRE) if you press the page+ button until you get to 'MIDI' (fourth option, you only see three at a time at the bottom of the screen but there are more than that), you'll get a page where you can set a MIDI channel for each of the four timbres in that program.

I don't know if you'll have noticed, but when you are in EDIT mode, the 16 keys will switch to 'page' mode, and each one will take you to a certain category. pressing page+ will take you through all of the pages on that category and on to the next category (they just run in a single order from start to finish. but when you leave the category, the key for the next category will light and obviously the title on the screen will be different).
