R3 help!

Post by atlassounds »

first post!

i've been lurkin this forum all day looking for answers, that i could not find.
sorry if you've heard this all before :(

i've got an R3.
i have a usb cable for it.
i have a m-audio fast track audio interface.

do i need anything else to control my r3 with midi signals through ableton, and hear the changes in real time?

did i make all of this up? is it even possible to do what im thinking? is so, what do i need?
thanks in advance

You can play Ableton's sounds using your R3.
Your R3 can be controlled and played by sequencing in Ableton.

However, in order to actually record the sounds of your R3 itself, you'll need to buy a 1/4" cable.

This may/may not be helpful:

i read that, you mean a 1/4 patch cable? like you would use to plug your synth or guitar into an amp?

cause i have a bunch of those, but i only have one available input on the fasttrack

the "Your R3 can be controlled and played by sequencing in Ableton." part is what i am most interested

also thank you for the reply.

yea, patch cable.

Now, with ableton there should be an option for something like 'external midi track' or midi output, midi track or something like that. (I don't know the DAW specifically, so I'll just go generically). Once you make one, set its output to be 'R3 Sound Channel 1'. Now, using something like piano roll view, you can 'sequence' ur R3, basically meaning the computer will play it over USB.

Sorry for the quick explanation, kind of busy atm.

If you would've asked before you bought the Fast Track, I would've recommended that you not buy it. The Fast Track Pro, MobilePre, or Transit would've all been a better choice because they have stereo line inputs, which the Fast Track doesn't have. The FT has one mic input and one guitar input, but because they are designed for different audio signals and levels, they are very inconvenient to use for a stereo synth with line outputs.

Because the Fast Track doesn't have 2 line inputs, then the easiest solution to record audio is to use a single mono 1/4" to 1/4" TR instrument cable from the L/MONO output of the R3 to the Guitar/Instrument input on the Fast Track. You won't get stereo, but at least you'll get something.

The best thing would be to sell/dump the FT and get something better suited for your purposes. You won't get the full capability of the R3 with the FT without much more hassle than it's worth.

yeah i realize now that the fast track was a bad choice, i bought it just because it was the cheapest option available.
if i could go back, i would have saved some more.

The Fast Track works fine for guitars, bass, and vocals, so there's plenty of people who could buy a lightly used one and get good use out of it. Maybe you could even do a trade for something they have that you can use? When you buy gear that you can't use very well, it can be better to dump it quickly while it's still the latest model and retains most of its resale value.

Having at least 4 line inputs and outputs on an I/O box is useful for a keyboardist, since it gives a lot more routing options when you have multiple pieces of gear and a mixer with 4 outputs. Besides two stereo synths, you can mix and match various combinations of mono or stereo outputs as a matrix without rewiring using a mixer with a lot of inputs.
