amplifying the m50

Post by brandon »

hi all, i'd just like some opinions on what's best for amplifying the m50. I've got a budget of $1000 aud (around $910 usd) and im thinking of getting a yamaha pa system, but im open to other ideas like keyboard amps. i need enough volume to gig with but i want something that sounds really good ie. gets the most out of the m50. any thoughts? thanks

I would really suggest on some kind of PA/monitor-system... On smaller venues which don't have their own PA you could use yours as a PA and on larger venues you could use your set as a monitor set for yourself. I really think that using keyboard amps is just a waste of money, because I really don't have lots of money and in home I play with headphones and with my band I play through training rooms pa-system and I'm very happy... If I'll ever get the money to buy myself some other gear than just keyboards, I will start with a mixer and then I will go for some floor monitors/studio monitors or even in-ear-monitors (I've heard that they are just perfect thing for gigging)

I'd go for a pair of MACKIE SRM 450.

I solved my AMP problems with two pairs of M-Audio studio monitors. The BX8a are great, tons of low sound and pretty loud. And I also got the BX5a, which are not so good in lows, but they are minuscule. Sound quality wise are superb.

I use them through a mixer/console, since I also record my kid's drumkit and some vocals, but the GREAT thing about the M-Audios is that they come with XLR plugs PLUS standard 1/4in plugs. So you can hook your M50 line outs Directly to the monitors with a pair of guitar cables. Nothing else is needed.

I think he is asking going "live", not studio amplification.

In my profile: " M-Audio BX8a for small gigs and studio". I find the BX8a very giggable. They have enough power to fill a small pub. Anything larger I would hire professional audio.

I went with two KC-500's I got for $350 for both. Then I went with Yamaha MC-8 mixer to mix everything at the keys and just run two lines, one to each amp. This keeps me from running six lines to the one amp and runing another line for stereo to amp 2. I then added another tweeter to each amp and I'm looking for JBL D130-F to replace the Jap speakers. Thats what I did.

Hi! The past week I baught a new Korg M50, and yesterday was the first live performance. I plug it to the main P.A of that place, BUT, I am using a pre amplifier...behringer mic200, I strongly recomend to use a preamplifier with the DIGITAL products...choose someone with a -20 or -10 pad, and spent as many as you can, cause in a preamplifier, its never enough....anyway, that behringer already give you a warmer and fatter sound...
Regards!!

I'm using a Yamaha StagePAS 250M. I have 2 of them. I mainly use 1 for a stage monitor but have had to use the 2nd as amplification for the crowd. 500 watts, 20 channels mixing (10 per PA speaker), and very lightweight. I like 'em.

You can run a line out of the StagePAS to the house PA. I run out of my StagePAS a stereo signal to a stereo DI (Radial JDI Duplex) to the PA.

how about Roland KC 350?

is this good? or the stereo samples will become useless with this one?

They won't be useless, since you'll hear them, but not separated in stereo since the KC350, being a stereo amplifier still have one single cabinet, so is impossible to hear stereo.

They do have what Roland calls Stereo Link Capability, in which you connect two KC350 with a single phone cable and then you will have true stereo sound.

Roland amps suck. They suck a LOT. I went the portable PA route and it's much lighter and sounds much better.

hi,
if you used a portable PA route, you still have to have a mixer right?
i have right now a xenyx 802 mixer, may i know what brand you used for your speakers>?

is it powered? or you used a separate amplifier?

i also used a powered speaker for my keys,
but i bought just 1 pc. i connected it to my mixer.

after 2 years of using it, it got busted.

are you familiar with the brand B3?

is it possible that it did bust because i use only 1 speaker and not a pair>?

thanks

The StagePAS 250M has a 10 channel mixer built into it. That's one of the major pluses of it. It can also be removed for stage use or left on the speaker.
