Korg m50 controlled by midi of Korg d888 recorder-possible?

Post by digartz »

I have a Korg M50 and a Korg D888 recorder - after the learning curve of the M50 - I truly love both of these - best investment in 20 years!

I’d like to be able to trigger (thru midi) the d888 recorder to play the M50’s keyboard sequenced tracks (no matter how many tracks there are) as soon as the D888 goes into record or play and stay synced even if punch in’s. Is this even possible? Kind of seems like it should be since the D888 has a midi out w/clock. The whole point would be to keep all the keyboard tracks residing on then M50 (keep them cleaner, editable) and save two more available record tracks on the D888.

I’ve looked through all three manuals and I’m completely lost on this one. As much midi recording and editing as I’ve done through all the years, I’m ashamed to admit how little patching I’ve done and now I’m way over my head trying to save a song that’s already built.

So as Sam Malone once said…”explain this to me like I’m four years old …please ” I'll forever be your friend!

The D888 can't control or playback anything via midi. All it does is send out midi clock. Midi clock is nothing more than a timing pulse. You can sync to the D888 clock, but that's it. What you want to do requires DAW software, if you want to automate the midi sequencing and the audio recording.

Would this work with the D3200?

Yes, the D3200 supports full automation using midi. You can even record all the adjustments to the mix that you do on the D3200 to an external sequencer, and then play them back to reproduce exactly what was done. You can arm it in record ready mode, and it will start recording when it receives midi clock from a sequencer, such as the M50 sequencer.
