'Dance' music sub sections/categorize?

Post by T-Dog »

Because I'm new to the world of 'Dance' type music, please could anyone explain the modern categorization of this techno, garage come dance subsections? I would like to learn the list/names or, expected terms that someone in this field should know.
For example, there is a chap called Pete Monsoon, Also known as:
DJ name 'Agro' & ‘Glennon’, Djing as 'Aldrich & Glennon' on the Bouncy House scene. who lives 3 doors away from me in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Some people may be familiar with his name as apparently he's a well known DJ of this genre/style of music. I would like to get chatting to him and gain some advice/inspiration but, I would look a fool not knowing the differences between the names of these music genres/styles or sub headings!
I would really appreciate any help on this front, even just to say what the latest trends names are and why.
Thank you in anticipation.
Tony

Bloody heck! I couldn't think of more than 6! Looks like there are hundreds!
Thank you for this link. It's spot on what I was looking for, I think.
A few hours on this forum and I've learned a great deal already. Thank you to all so far.
I hope to derive some sense of logic from the link and, looking at the list on the left (House, Trance, Techno, Breakbeat, Jungle, Hardcore & Downtempo), looks a good place to start remembering. All those sub-sub headings would take forever! I wouldn't know one sound from the other! I've a lot to learn.
Thank you once again. Tony

I just looked up my neighbour Pete Monsoon to see what he's into now:

Bouncy/Scouse House
Bassline House/4x4
Old Skool/Club Classics
Funky House/Electro

Dj Names:
My DJ name ‘Monsoon’ came from one of my favourite UK Hip Hop Groups called ‘Black Radical MK2’, their track was called ‘Monsoon’ which was a big favourite with me.

My DJ name ‘Agro DJ's’ was thought up by Mark Aldrich a fellow Agro DJ Himself, we mainly have this DJ name as a double act when DJ'ing on the Bassline House, 4x4 scene.

My DJ name ‘Glennon’ is used in Back 2 Back sets with Mark Aldrich, Djing as 'Aldrich & Glennon' on the Bouncy House scene.

So, it seems he's got as many DJ names as genres!
If you recognise him or, can give a Youtube link to the type of music, that would be great.

I've found a lot of the Wikipedia articles on Electronica and its sub-genres to be quite useful.

Electro
Dance
Trance
Drum & Bass
Progressive

and so on...
There are quite often audio samples too!

another genre that isn't listed there is
Tecktonik. Extremely popular (the dance and music) in South America.
Its very unique in Genre but VERY repetitive amongst itself. maybe its also considered Electro or even Dubstep but down here its known as Tecktonik
