Recording damper pedal in sequencer

Post by StaleYolk »

Greetings all,
I'm familiar with the sequencer i use it for song-writing. (mostly synth stuff) But i am now working on a composition that is a more involved piano piece. The sustain works as i play and record but upon playback it is not present.

Also what is the cc# for damper?. I want to
1: record my song piece by piece (say 10 to 15 measures at a time) afterwards deleting the controller data but not the note data
2: record the next ten measures the same way. remove controller data.
3: Change "recording pref." to overdub and add all the pedal work through entire song all in one-shot.
*I noticed that when i recorded a song in chunks like this... the damper from the last played notes would trigger my pedal off when recording the next set of measures ~Very Frustrating~
I figure removing all the damper data each chunk should end this problem
Thanks in advance :)

Not sure why this would be happening ... make sure when you quantize, you are only quantizing NOTE data - it's set by default to ALL. if you quantize "ALL" it will quantize the pedal events along with note data. Check the filter in Global Mode - make sure everything is set to ENA to enable receiving of all types of MIDI data. Also, check your MIDI filter pages in SEQ mode.

Also, check your damper polarity in Global Mode under Controllers... prob not the case here, but never hurts to check.

Sustain Pedal Controller # is CC# 64. 0 value = Pedal OFF, 127 value= Pedal ON. Why do you want to delete controller data? Why put it in there in the first place? If it is because of aftertouch, that is a separate MIDI event, not a CC#. There is a command in the SEQ Track Edit page to allow you to delete all of one controller, or all pitch bend, All aftertouch, etc.

With the pedal events... i can understand your frustrations here, I deal with it also. what you can do is use the overdub setting, press down on the pedal, press REC + START/STOP (while holding pedal down), and then record the pedal-OFF event where you want it. That would save you the trouble of deleting all your CC#64 events and re-recording all of them. You can also enter EVENT EDIT mode, and just insert a CC#64 event, value 0 on the last tick of the last beat of the last measure you recorded. a stray pedal-off event won't make any trouble for you unless the pedal is supposed to be down.

Good luck, i hope all this helps! The triton sequencers are all kinda cumbersome to get around, but they work so well!

I think that may be what's happening, i do have quantize set to all, to be honest im not really sure how to properly use the quantizing feature. I would love to learn, however i feel my timing is pretty accurate :).
Although musical phrases with the notes perfectly snapped to the grid would be the easiest to cut and paste within a sequence. (i notice sometimes that if the attack of a synth pad is slightly before the 1 beat when i copy that phrase it won't play at all because that initial attack is missing) But i guess thats off topic from my original question. There should be a FAQ or tutorial section on this website. I guess certain topics do get stickied though. :P

Not too much to know about quantizing - just set what types of events you want to quantize (almost always it should be NOTE only), and then set your resolution - HI means no quantizing at all.
