Help! Trying to record songs from Korg EMX to Garageband

Post by nickslikk »

I have a Korg EMX, USB midi cable, and garageband. I know how to hook up my EMX to my laptop via the USB midi cable, but I don't know what I need to do on my EMX to get it to record songs to garageband. Please help me!

just replace r3/radias with EMX.

are you trying to record midi data thats already in the electribe? record the audio from your patterns? or use the electribe as a midi controller to use on garagebands instruments?

then you probably want to record audio - midi is not audio - using a midi cable won't help

an audio interface will DEF make things sound better, but ....
you'll need a stereo instrument cable with 1/4 jack on one end and 1/8 jack on the other end. or a stereo instrument cable and a 1/8 adapter. id plug the cable into the headphones on the electribe and the 1/8in end into the audio in on your computer, your computer should have one, it would be a headphone type jack located probably next to the headphone out jack. after you got that hooked up, just hit record in GB, hit play on electribe and you should be goin. im pretty sure garageband doesnt send midi start stop msgs and may send its time clock, so its up to you if you want it plugged in like that but it probably wont do a whole lot and isnt necessary in that particular program.

ps id recommend a usb multichannel mixer interface for recording, not only will it sound better since its not using your computers soundcard, but you'll be able to take advantage of the 4 assignable outs on the electribe. :D

and, of course, by microphone.

yeah you could just let it rip thru your speakers into the mic - that actually sounds awesome when you resample sounds that way

Is there any way to convert the file extension that the emx saves the file under into a mp3 file? If so, how?

@nickslick

The EMX only saves midi data. Midi data is just musical notes/music timing. The actual audio is generated by the sound engine inside the EMX. You must connect the audio outputs of your EMX into the audio inputs on your computer. Usually you have to buy some sort of interface to plug the audio into on a computer in order to record.

If you're having trouble understanding these concepts, please tell me, and I'll get you some reading material/youtube links that will explain. You're gonna have to learn the difference of a synth engine and a sequencer though. The ESX is both in one machine.
Using Korg EMX & ESX, R3, and MicroX.
