Tips on making good choir ensemble and pan pipe flute sounds

Post by xTsukasa »

Hello,

Ive found that all the possible default choir esemble sounds that come on the R3 or any of the R3 libraries are quite horrible, i want a smooth female sounding "aaaah" sound. Im also looking to make a pan pipe flute sound. Any suggestions? my attempts havent been fruitless but they dont sound as good as I hoped, and yes i have tried tweaking the preset sounds and still cant get it right.

The panpipe sound might be possible, but I doubt you'll get a 'female aaah' sound. The R3 is a fairly complex and powerful synthesizer, but typically those kinds of detailed articulate choirs can only come from a sampler/rompler.

The default choir and ensemble sounds are based on the voice formant oscillator or the digital voice wave - they are synthesizer sounds and not really intended to be ultra realistic.

Hmm well in this following video the author made all thwe sounds using the korg r3

He has a really good choir esemble which starts almost imediately. Ive tried contacting him about it but no reply unfortunately. So i do beleive it can be done on the r3

Hi xTsukasa,

well this pad is synthetical and maybe uses a vox pad from the DWGS. Add a little noise and use the decimator as wave shape to get that breathy character typical for choirs. You also can try starting from my Air Pad patch and then changing oscillator 1 to some DWGS or formant wave

Yes, I was conufsed because you said you wanted a 'female aaah' sound, which is completely not what is in the video you linked.

It is interesting actually because there is a PCM sample on the Radias which sounds a lot like this.

choir sounds and pan pipe on Radias

Post by colinf »

interesting subject this one, by chance the other evening I created a choir type sound from a preset which I altered.
pretty sure it was not derived from the pan pipe ( although it may have been ). will have a go to recreate this sound .

My current setup is linked via MIDI to my Yamaha RS 7000 sampler / rompler.
I have noticed that depending on which certain buttons Arp, step seq 1 or 2 then its seems that the RS7000 is altering the sound in a unique way that totally changes the Radias sound.

sorry to digress here perhaps I should post a question on this subject in its own right.
perhaps someone out there can explain what my setup is doing based on the way I have set it up ? :( .

Unfortunately the "choir" sample of the Radias is not as good as the ones from the R3. The loops in the Radias are clearly audible creating this typical "wah-wah" effect at the higher notes. This gives it a typical "cheap" rompler character. In general I was more happy with the R3 samples.

It would be a nice option to be able to upload own PCM's to the Radias (KORG, can you hear me?) :)

Formant choir pads

Post by Darkside »

Hi! It is possible to get quite convincing choir sounds by using two bandpass filters, like in formant synthesis. I have achieved quite a good results applying it to a saw with detune modulation. You can also add a bit of second saw shifted octave up for simulating harmonically ritcher sound. Next comes some noise for breathyness. Finally add some fx as wanted, reverb and chorus are good, but experimentation is the key. Hope this helps, Your friend from the dark!

I've tried this before - results were okay, it needs everything to be tuned correctly.
What do you tune the two filters to to get an 'ahhh' sound? I assume the filters are in parallel mode?

It would be nice of KORG gave us a 'formant' mode filter where the balance knob goes between different vowels. The formant oscillator is okay bot you're stuck with whatever awful waveform they've chosen for it.
