R3 tempo knob interval issue...any help?

Post by bizkato »

ok, so i'm having an issue getting the tempo to match certain BPM when using the R3. for instance, oftentimes i can scroll from, let's say, 156bpm to 159 bpm but not be able to make it 157 or 158bpm. what's up with this jump in tempo? my issue is i'm using a looper mostly to make music and it's becoming an issue when i try to match arps over existing loops. if anyone knows how to access those missing values would you please let me know. thank-you

tbh i had never noticed this fault. I can find no way of getting the missing values, and belive it would only be fixable with a firmware update

You can set and save any BPM value with the software editor. If you're not using the software editor, you're missing out on the best way to program your R3.

I think I mentioned this before in a similar thread, but I recall on my microKorg you could use the SHIFT + Transpose buttons to increment/decrement the current parameter.

Can't remember if this functionality if available in the R3?

thanks for the advice. i hadn't thought about pulling it up on the computer to do it. isn't there any way of doing it without using the software editor? i still think that'd be ideal. thanks for all the input

Sadly, it is not.

I had noticed this issue previously, and it seems the only real solution is to pull up the editor and change the value. Also, you could connect your equipment via MIDI, and set the R3 to use external MIDI Clock? Or you could just change the tempo on your other equipment to match what the R3 is playing. (What I usually do because I'm to lazy too hook up to my laptop...)

As to the reasoning behind this, I think it's mainly aimed at ease of use. Although the R3's temp goes all the way up to 300, how many people do you know that set their tempo to 278 bpm on a regular basis? So, they set the R3 to use a larger scale nearer the lower and higher ends, while using a more exact scale near the center. That way it doesn't take us 4 minutes to switch from 120 to 128 bpm.

its really frustrating when you are jamming as a band in the garage to a click track and the drummer has to set the tempo around you because you have missing tempo values

I think a slippery tempo knob has nothing to do with your case. I haven't heard of a metronome with implemented atomic clock in it yet. There are always a slight changes among devices. Not mentioning the problem how to sync their start. So either all use one device (one tempo track) or let drummer make the job :), it will be a way easier and you will always play along. The other story is how to sync effects , arps, rpses and stuff but even if you manage to set a correct tempo and your keyboard is not midi synced with drummer metronome (tick) the 99,9 % of time (it's my guess) your tempo synced stuff will sound off beat.
